We've been waiting for it for a long time, but The Gunk is now finally available on Xbox Game Pass! To coincide with the release, the first reviews have also been dropping across the web over the past hour.

The game is developed by SteamWorld developer Image & Form, and sees you attempting to battle the curse of a toxic gunk parasite, using your trusty Power Glove to reverse the corruption, uncover secrets of old and heal the planet.

So, what are critics saying about the game so far? Here are some of the reviews we've found:

Windows Central (4.5/5)

"The Gunk is a satisfying puzzle-adventure game where two down-on-their-luck space scrappers must help save an alien planet from a destructive black goo. The combat in The Gunk does feel frustratingly underbaked, but solid story pacing and excellent puzzle challenges help overshadow the struggle."

Eurogamer (4/5 - Recommended)

"I started The Gunk worrying about how one of the great 2D design teams would cope with three dimensions. The truth is they cope so effortlessly that I just spent the next four or five hours gloriously lost in what they had built."

IGN (7/10)

"The Gunk is a fun little platforming adventure full of malicious messes that are plenty satisfying to clean up. The small twists each new area puts on its fairly simple mechanics never drastically shake up its formula of vacuuming the landscape and then hopping to the next location, but an enticing story and a beautiful sense of style keep the clean-up process consistently entertaining throughout its relatively brief campaign."

GameReactor (7/10)

"It's an adventure that doesn't quite live up to its own potential due to some questionable choices. But despite the fact that the pace is sometimes a little too slow, which is enhanced by the melancholy music as well as some minor technical shortcomings, I can still recommend you to download this."

Game Informer (7/10)

"The Gunk deserves a fair bit of criticism and only a little unreserved praise. The connection between the characters holds up the story, sucking up goo is strangely satisfying, and the mechanics work as intended. However, I wish the world felt more distinctive and better realized. The environment has the potential to be a vibrant kaleidoscope with brilliant hues and unearthly forms. Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite hit that mark. All said, The Gunk is a competent romp through space, but not a stellar one."

Destructoid (6/10)

"There is nothing fundamentally wrong with The Gunk. It works from a technical standpoint and it isn’t the worst way you can spend about five hours of your time. But I just can’t muster up any sort of authentic excitement about it. If it were funnier or cleverer or more challenging, I could maybe start to see it as a title I could recommend."

GamesRadar (3/5)

"Rani and Becks are an appealing duo to share adventures with, but they deserve something more exciting than The Gunk has to offer."

The average seems to be sitting somewhere around the 7/10 mark, then (Metacritic has yet to establish an aggregate rating at the time of writing), with a mixture of praise and criticism doing the rounds. Give it a try for yourself and let us know how you feel about it!
