Unfortunately, we're not here today to tell you the Silent Hill series is returning. Instead, we're here to talk about what is arguably one of the greatest horror games ever created - Silent Hill 2 - which is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
On this day in 2001, Konami released Silent Hill 2 into the world, haunting the dreams of gamers everywhere. The game was widely praised for its eerie atmosphere, use of psychological horror and engaging narrative. There are so many parts of the soundtrack that get right under our skin today and we won't ever look at a bathroom the same way again.
From the first chilling encounter with Pyramid Head all the way up to the terrifying nurses, there are so many iconic moments that will stick with us forever.
Silent Hill 2 has been recognised for all these horrific features, with a Metacritic score of 84 based on 23 reviews. At the time, critics such as IGN claimed "the overall gloom of the franchise has never been so vivid", whilst Official Xbox Magazine said the game's "super-creepy antics frame a stellar storyline".
It is possible to play the game on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S via the Silent Hill HD Collection, however it's been widely criticised for being a downgrade on the original game. While by no means terrible, if you have the means to play the classic version, there could be worse ways to spend your weekend.
Do you have any fond Silent Hill 2 memories? Drop us a comment and let us know.

Soon....
Soon.
I remember physically sweating (because I was scared) while playing this when it first came out. I loved it and still love it.
20 years old? 2 decades old?
Everybody better be opening their doors and getting on their floors because apparently I'm a walking dinosaur.
It's kind of a shame that original members of Team Silent ended up becoming Project Siren within Sony's Japan Studio.
Now that Japan Studio has been closed, all eyes are on Bokeh Game Studio.
Silent Hill hasn't been the same since Konami started to outsource.
Amazing game, I have the Silent Hill HD Collection for Xbox.
I highly recommend Homecoming and Downpour for anyone who hasn't played them yet. I definitely was prepared to hate them, but ended up loving them.
And nice choice of video to embed in the article, LMAO!
What's the downgrade? Is it censored or something?
@Krysus No, nothing like that. They were just bad remasters. There are audio sync problems, shoddy framerates and SH2 had no fog effects.
I still have the original collector's edition of Silent Hill 2 on PS2.
Absolute masterpiece of a game and most certainly one of my favourite games of all time 😊
Best horror game ever.
