Time just doesn't seem to want to stop, so when we come to a substantial milestone for a game, it's hard to believe it was so long ago. And so, our collective jaws dropped when we realised Gears of War 3 has now hit its 10th anniversary.
That's right, Gears of War 3, the final chapter of the original trilogy graced our Xbox 360 consoles on this day back in 2011. It was an emotional end to the saga, with many gut-punching moments for long-term fans. Even today, some players still dive into the game for classic co-op action or even a bit of horde mode.
Some Twitter users have even shared some nostalgic pictures on Twitter of the game's in-store launch, complete with merch and Xbox 360 console bundles. In a world of online retailers, we do miss moments like these.
Xbox also commemorated the occasion with a spoilerific (you've been warned) meme from Gears of War 3's campaign, wishing the game a happy birthday in the process.
Gears of War 3 was the last numbered title to be developed by Epic Games before the franchise was moved over to The Coalition. Whether you prefer the original trilogy or the latest iterations, it's hard to deny the massive impact the series has had on the Xbox brand over the past 15 years.

We need a Gears Of War 2 & 3 remaster, That would be amazing..
While not that different from the first 2 gameplay-wise, I did love the conclusion to the first trilogy. Awesome game.
Every gears of war i played is a masterpiece.
Loved playing with my friends slaying those monsters all together.
The entire series doesn’t get the credit it deserves. The Coalition have done a masterful job picking up where Epic left off. I love the Gears series.
Despite some issues, Gears Of War 3 remains my personal favourite in the series, and as a package it was hard to beat back in 2011. A mostly superb campaign (with 4 player co-op to boot), arguably the series' best multiplayer, and Horde 2.0, along with the fun but ultimately inessential Arcade and Beast modes... Gears 3 had it all.
Gears of War 3 was my one and only midnight release. I played it till about 430 in the morning and sank so much time into horde over the years
I'd believe it was 10 years ago. Great game but it feels like forever ago.
I can only talk about 1, 2, 3 and Judgement this far because those are the titles I've played, on Series X. They are enjoyable games with fun multiplayer, brilliant campaigns and good scripts except Judgement (from People can Fly) that has an absolutely plain script and the gameplay is too Resident Evil The Mercenaries. The previous games draw better Resident Evil inspiration.
People that don't play on Xbox think that Gears is another boring shooter but it is a gem that is not ashamed of being what it wants to be. The scripts are the most believable and enjoyable I have heard in years, just real in a good sense. Gameplay takes things from Resident Evil which is one of my favourite franchises and it's funny that Uncharted was inspired by Gears according to Naughty Dog because Uncharted 1 is a very bad game with rubbish gameplay.
People that don't play on Xbox also think that Halo and Gears are basically the same. I have only played Halo 1, 2 and 3 this far, they have some interesting tactical aspects like improving aim and being dynamic and creative, they share some elements as shooters but the tone and rhythm are absolutely different. To me, Gears have been more enjoyable this far, Halo has enjoyable tactical scenarios and a lot of multiplayer options but the stories and some endings left me saying wtf.
My next GoW, Gears, is 4.
@BlueOcean “ People that don't play on Xbox think that Gears is another boring shooter”
I think it’s so funny that people will claim that the Gears franchise is stale while at the same time singing Ratchet & Clank 12’s praises (that’s right, there are 12 mainline R&C games).
“ To me Gears have been more enjoyable this far”
I also 100% agree with this. I know this is a matter of taste, but I just enjoy the character interactions in Gears way more. Master Chief is a bit too robotic for my taste, and I feel I actually have a hard time relating with him because he never takes off the helmet. I think this is actually why I really enjoy Halo 5 more than most. 343 tried to develop some Spartan characters, and people just wanted more Chief.
@Hypnotoad107 Yep and the last entry, Rift Apart, is less creative and the gameplay is more monotonous than in the original/reboot. I think it was Mark Cerny that said that PS5 hardware, specifically the SSD, makes Rift Apart possible but later the developer admitted that the game could run on PS4, too. Apart from the 12 Ratchet & Clank games, most of Sony's games are depressive samey interactive third-person semi-open-world experiences.
@Originut Yep if you enable FPS boost on Gears 4 the console runs the Xbox One version and not the Xbox One X version, so pointless. I will play without FPS boost, in frame rate mode at 1080p 60fps like you.
