The spotlight is well and truly on WWE 2K22 this year following a two-year break in development for the series, and while we haven't seen much of it so far, early insider reports are suggesting very positive things about the game.
This comes courtesy of Forbes writer Brian Mazique in a YouTube stream (transcribed by VGC), who explained that he's heard from people who have "good knowledge" of WWE 2K22 that the gameplay is "looking fantastic".
“I have actually spoken with people who have good knowledge of the game and understand what’s happening from a developmental standpoint, and what I’m told about gameplay at this point is that it is fantastic..."
"That is actually the word that was used for the latest build. The people who were playing the latest build have said the gameplay is fantastic."
Mazique went on to point out that the information should somewhat be taken with a pinch of salt as "anybody who is talking about gameplay at this point is probably somewhat close to 2K [developer of WWE 2K22]", but nevertheless he's been told the game is "playing fantastic and the gameplay engine is completely rebuilt".
He even mentioned that he's been informed the game "feels like a wrestling fan’s wrestling game.”
There's no release date for WWE 2K22 as of yet, and all we've seen is a very short trailer from WrestleMania 37 back in April. We're really hoping for big things from this one, so let's hope it "hits different" as the tagline suggests.

A fantastic butchering of the English language there Pure Xbox. Congratulations.
Can't get any worse, they tried but messed up last time. Hopefully much better this time! Biggest disappointment of wrestling games. Bring back smackdown v raw games back
Hope they have a lot of legends planned otherwise the roster is going to be barren af if they keep it up to date.
I'm definitely interested to see what they did with their time though. I enjoyed 19 but as a long time player you can clearly see the 20+ year old foundation the game is built on. If the game was consistently good that would be okay but it's far from it. I know people harp on a lot of games for iterating and barely changing but that's better than what you get most years with WWE. Hell, most fans would kill for a "Here Comes the Pain" or "SvR 07" with modern graphics, some updated modes and rosters.
And don't get me started on the biggest thing they introduced in the later games; "Universe mode". It sounds like a wrestling fans dream but is incredibly undercooked, even after half a dozen or so attempts. It's less of a game mode and more of a toy box that you interact with. It feels pointless overall though and never really engages you as a player. You basically have to put work into it to get anything out it. Pretty much sums up the series on modern consoles at this juncture.
Needless to say I didn't even bother with 20...
@SplooshDmg Not sure if you're aware but Yukes is working with AEW. They've got the design lead from AKI during the No Mercy days on board too. Very early days atm but hopefully they come up with something good.
@WILLBACRIMP What, "playing fantastic"? It's a literal quote of what was said.
"I have been told that the game is playing fantastic and that the gameplay engine is completely rebuilt..."
They are gonna have to do something special to bring me back.
Some awesome CAW features would certainly do it.
@FraserG Perhaps you could have used one of the quotes in the headline that was grammaticality correct, such as "The people who were playing the latest build have said the gameplay is fantastic."
Im waiting for the AEW game can't wait.
In all honesty we’ve heard this all before. I am expecting a bare bones game that will feel, for long time fans, a backward step and whilst the gameplay might be improved in some areas I have no doubts this game will, unfortunately, disappoint.
@FraserG ignore him. Nothing but a troll. Nothing wrong with using the quote at all and people now will often use the phrase “playing fantastic” - the thing will language is it evolves and changes and many cling on to an old fashioned “language can only work one way” approach… usually in an attempt to belittle others and make themselves seem and feel intelligent when, unfortunately, it usually means the opposite.
@Stocksy Wow. So wanting a journalist to use the English language correctly is now being a Troll. I have no words.
@WILLBACRIMP there is no set way “to use the English language correctly” - Those that are from Newcastle, Liverpool, Adelaide, New York… all use the language differently and the notion that “Queen's English” is somehow correct is a very outdated and problematic way to look at language. He used a quote for someone else anyway.
@Stocksy Human dialect and the written word are entirely separate entities.
