Update: We've now got confirmation on more details about this optimisation, including the fact that DirectX Raytracing is reserved for the 30fps mode, and there's even a special 120hz mode at 1080p if you want to use it.
"With three graphics modes you can pick your preference of frame rate, resolution, or visual fidelity, along with upgraded materials, particles and LOD (Level of Detail). We’ve also included the feature most requested by our community: chapter select! Now you can replay your favourite moments from Senua’s journey to Helheim, and make sure you track down every last lorestone."
Platform | Mode | Raytracing | Resolution | FPS |
Xbox Series X | Performance | No | Dynamic Up To 1080p | 120HZ |
Xbox Series X | Resolution | No | Dynamic Up To 4K | 60FPS |
Xbox Series X | Enriched | Yes | Dynamic Up To 4K | 30FPS |

Original story: We weren't expecting this! It's been announced today that Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice has received a totally free upgrade for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, and of course, it's also included with Xbox Game Pass.
The upgrade follows a celebration of the game's fourth anniversary over the past 24 hours, having first released for PS4 & PC back on August 8, 2017, and adds "enriched visuals, DirectX Raytracing, resolution mode and more".
You can grab the download right now on your console, and here's what the blurb says about it:
"Relive Senua's journey and experience her world through new eyes in Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, now optimised for Xbox Series X|S. Available now with enriched visuals, DirectX Raytracing, resolution mode and more."
Will you be returning to Hellblade / trying it out for the first time with this update? Let us know down below.

Still haven't beat this so definitely giving it a go for the next 10K punchcard.
Okay. Time to go back one more time.
Yessss! I never got round to playing beyond the first hour of this so goes straight to the top of the backlog!
Haven't played it yet, gonna have to now ahah
Going to revisit. Maybe got 3-4 levels in. Man the atmosphere in the game and setting are done to near perfection.
@SplooshDmg I always play with headphones on =) I'm looking forward to playing it tomorrow night. I'll be sure to have the lights off, too haha
I really didn’t like this game. The visuals are great though so I’d be interested to see what this looks like.
I might have to replay this.
I was stupid and ignored the "Wear Headphones" aspect of the game and opted to use my surround sound system - I scoffed at the idea that headphones could be superior to my high-end sound system.
Well, I was wrong. Now I fully understand binaural sound and how it works and really should play the game "as intended".
I’d love to try the headphone thing but sadly I’m deaf in one ear so the binaural audio would be lost on me. Have to stick with my Atmos surround sound.
Welp time to pick up where I left off, wherever that was (think it was some imaginary fire).
I haven't finished this game yet myself so I may well jump back in and try and finish it.
I like how even 9 months after the Series X|S launch you still get these announcements. Go online and "Surprise! Optimized! Have some raytracing!"
Dammit I'm gonna have to re-install and play through this again, aren't I?
I stupidly peeked at the Twitter comments and instantly came across PlayStation players calling Ninja Theroy anti consumer...I think I'll bleach my eyeballs now
@Krzzystuff This is on my "play later" list for the next 10k punchcard too. Don't know if I'll wait now though knowing it's super shiny.
This is a very pleasant surprise. I platinumed the game on my PS4, but now it looks like I'm going to have to replay the game on my Series X and get those achievements. The game is fantastic, and its sequel is one of the main reasons I focused my attention on getting an Xbox this generation.
Lol, I literally just finished this game for the first time like a week ago.
And yeah, headphones are basically a requirement.
@The_New_Butler I'm more of a Push Square member than anything else so my apologies on behalf of the bad apples.
Anyway, I'd echo everything you said about this game. I never picked it up because I was too hesitant to buy it (having been burned one too many times by bad games that look good) so Game Pass really came in handy here.
@The_New_Butler the editors didnt help publishing an article on it.
In my mind it was so obvious it wouldnt come to Playstation it wasnt even news worthy.
This is gonna be one of the next games i play for sure..
@SacredPYRO i can't get enough time to play at the moment so I'm not going to have any issues waiting unfortunately.
@The_New_Butler I had to venture over and look. Morbid curiosity. That's a lot of salt, almost enough to fill an ocean. If I ever get so fed up of Sony owning exclusives I'll buy their console, not cry about it. Ah well. Gaming community has been like this for years, and for some, the dreamcast days scars still remain haha
Loved Hellblade. Not a fan of raytracing. Waiting for the sequel.
@SplooshDmg It's refreshing to finally feel like xbox is doing things right again. I was a massive 360 head, then delved into my PS4, only to find myself back to the Xbox one X and now Series X. I know both camps can be toxic and vicious but so far the Sony camp seems the more feverishly insane haha
I’ve already completed the game and unlocked all the achievements but I’ll be downloading this again just to check out the raytracing and may even play through the entire game again now I have the Xbox Wireless Headset.
Good in VR as well.
We want 60@1440p or 1080p with DirectX Raytracing Please you hear our voices Microsoft 🙏🙏🙏
I tried this again last night - what a difference the 60fps performance mode makes. It runs beautifully.
That said, I wasn't overly impressed by the "enriched" mode with raytracing - it felt a bit blurry and kinda like a hangover.
I actually like the combat in this game a lot. Not sure why others hate it so much. I've actually been playing this game a lot more often than God of War or Demons Souls Remake. All great games in my opinion.
@Doctorwhoooourgh they should do an update for PS5 and sell it to them for £10, they seem to like that
WORD OF WARNING!
If you plan to play this game on your series x do not use quick resume. This game has a glitch that stuffs up your achievements and they WILL NOT pop. DO not use quick resume whatever you do. Quit the game once you have finished for the day
@SithThanos thanks =) I was planning on using quick resume for the first time as well hahaha, life saved mate =)
