Well, after speculation and rumours galore over the past few weeks, it's finally happening - a Dead Space remake is in the works at EA Motive and is coming to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S at some point in the future.
The short but sweet trailer showcased in-engine footage of the classic USG Ishimura ship from the original game, and ended with a small taste of the main protagonist, Isaac. It's described as "a classic rebuilt by EA Motive", and will be created from the ground up for PC and next-gen consoles, including Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
Interestingly, the press release states that the game will feature "an improved story, characters, gameplay mechanics and more" as well. Here's what senior producer Phillippe Ducharme had to say about the announcement:
“The Dead Space franchise made a huge impact on the survival horror genre when it was released 12 years ago, and I came to Motive as a fan first to specifically work on this game. We have a passionate team at Motive who are approaching this remake as a love letter to the franchise. Going back to the original and having the opportunity to do so on next-gen consoles excited everyone on the team.
As we look to modernize the game, we’ve reached out to dedicated fans and invited them to provide us with feedback since the early stages of production to deliver the Dead Space game they want and for new players to enjoy as well.”

Iiiiiisaaaaaaac! I'm hyped beyond belief. Love Dead Space 1 and 2.
This is amazing news! I loved the game when it originally released, and I can't wait to experience this game again, but with the power of current generation consoles.
I just can't believe that it's actually happening. EA is slowly turning things around, first with Mass Effect 4 and now a remake of Dead Space. I seriously can't wait to play this game, the first Dead Space is my favourite horror game of all time!
Nice. I will probably get this when I build my gaming PC.
Once i build my gaming PC, I will probably get the original DS game
YES!!! I'm so excited, I love Dead Space so much. Both games are phenomenal! Yes, I said both. Because two, exactly two, mainline Dead Space games were ever released and not a single one more.
I'm excited, although I'm fairly certain that the "Cut off their limbs" warning is still just written in stock horror font re-used from the original game.
Wonder how Glen Schofield feels about his new game (The Callisto Protocol) going head-to-head with his original work!
A tragedy that EA shut down Visceral before having this change of heart.
EA turning back into a real single player games developer? I never thought I'd see the day. Weirdly I've never actually played Dead Space so I'm not sure whether to play the first now or wait
More importantly, this game better make full use of 3D spatial audio on both PS5 and Series X.
The audio design of the original game is legendary! There were plenty of times that the audio was more unsettling than the actual combat.
I can not wait for this.
@carlos82 do play it! The first and the second one. You're in for a treat. I've beaten each one at least three times, so if this game happens to be your thing, I don't think you will be done after your first playthrough (and if it's not, you will just save yourself $70, since the whole trilogy is available on Game Pass).
Moreover, the remake is probably years away and it will not be a 100% faithful recreation of the original game.
Excited for this. Good move EA.
Actually very surprised....
@GamingFan4Lyf According to an interview with IGN, that's exactly what the team is doing:
https://www.ign.com/articles/dead-space-remake-gameplay-story-ps5-xbox-tech-details
“3D audio [will also add the] understanding of where the sound comes from, having the right propagation, in the corridors, making it come from the vents above you, or behind you. These are all things that we'll be able to expand on to increase the level of immersion.”
SO F-ING HYPED!! DAY 1! YYYEEESSSSSS 😃😃😃
@FraserG Awesome!
The surround sound in the original game on 360 is amazing and has rarely been matched in any horror game.
I think the only other game I can think that even matches the use of surround sound to raise tension is Alien Isolation.
Playing the Xbox 360 version of Dead Space on the Series X while using headphone virtual surround sound of choice in the game is just awesome (I use Dolby Atmos for Headphones as my spatial audio solution on Series X).
It will truly be incredible when the noises will come from ANYWHERE in this new game instead of just front or rear channels of the original.
There are not too many games where I feel headphones enhance the experience over a nice home theater setup; but Dead Space is one of those audio experiences that needs to be beamed right into the ears.
First I was super concerned that this is just a teaser. Meaning the game is very early in development.
Then I learn they are taking cues from fans about what to do with the game. Meaning the team probably don't have a solid concept for the game.
So rather than being "Hey. We've had and pitched a really good concept for the rebooting of this franchise" it feels more like "Yeah, we've been tasked with doing a reboot and we're just trying to scrap together ideas on the fly".
Wish they were doing a dead space trilogy remaster first then this remake
I'm excited but at the same time it's a tad sad to think EA has to look backward to ascertain that quality they once held to such high esteem. Past projects being remastered or remade to stay relevant is slightly depressing. But, that said, it'll build a stronger fan base and hopefully will help boost future games like the upcoming new mass effect...well, I dare to dream
I'm not really fussed if it is a straight up remake but will buy it anyway in the hope they do more with the franchise.
Incredibly excited for this!
The original is one of my all time favourite games 😊
Silent Hill 2 is still the GoaT for me when it comes to survival horror but this is very close behind 😁
So many bloody E3 presentations I've sat through piss bored hoping for this. Now I get it... I'm so happy.
I bought the Xbox 360 trilogy on Xbox One and haven't played it!
Absolutely amazing! Cannot wait to play this!
Personally, I'm not sure a remake is the right way forward for Dead Space. No doubt EA cite the Resi 2 remake's well-deserved success, but the thing about remaking that game was that the original was from a bygone era of both the survival-horror genre and gaming overall. Dead Space meanwhile, despite showing its age (nearly 13 years), still feels very modern. How much can a remake really bring to the table?
Not that I should complain too much. More Dead Space, whatever form it takes, is a good thing, I'd say - who could say no to some Frostbite-powered strategic dismemberment? I'd have just preferred an all new Dead Space which harks back to the original.
@TimG13 I think EA needed Motive (studio behind the remake) to make a remake of Dead Space first before making a completely new game. The reason being that they haven't worked on Dead Space before and when a studio takes over an old franchise that another studio worked on, then it usually starts with a remake. For example, when 343 took over after Bungie, they made Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary and not Halo 4 immediately. Same with The Coalition after Epic Games, they made Gears of War Ultimate Edition and then Gears of War 4. So making a remake of the first Dead Space is simply because EA wants Motive to learn how to craft these games first. I'm certain they have more long-term plans for the franchise and a new game is definitely going to come out eventually, given that the remake sells well that is.
So I personally don't see the problem with this, we're going to get more games for this franchise regardless. Not to mention that because the series has been absent for almost a decade, a remake is definitely going to help bring people up to speed about what this series is all about instead of making them jump straight into the fourth game.
Ohh hell yeah. Keep the horror aspect and you will succeed fail to do so and you will get Dead Space 3. Bring it on!
Dead Space is my all time favourite franchise (followed very closely by Gears and Mass Effect) so I'm truly hyped for this. I bought each of the original games day one and have beaten each multiple times including on the hardest difficulties, obtaining all achievements in each game. I just hope they don't even think about including co-op or multiplayer again.
Dead Space 3 is not a terrible game, it just doesn't feel like a true sequel to 1 and 2, which were each, by comparison, masterpieces. I still enjoyed the game (more so solo than when I played through it in co-op) but I was just left disappointed, mostly because much of the horror had been diminished and being forced to miss out on content if you played solo was really annoying.
I'm on board with a full remake, as a prelude to a brand new game, just please don't mess it up!
@LtSarge Those are different to this.
Halo CEA was a remaster and was done by Saber and Certain Affinity. And Halo 4 used practically zero of the gameplay or tech of CE. So 343 took zero experience away from that project.
Gears of War was also a remaster, but was done by the Coalition, so while they didn't get much in the way of game design experience, they did at least get to know the engine and I'd imagine, brought forward that tech to help create Gears 4.
Your examples of 343i and Coalition would actually support a remaster of the original rather than a remake.
@Richnj https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halo:_Combat_Evolved_Anniversary
"Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is a 2011 first-person shooter video game developed by 343 Industries, Saber Interactive and Certain Affinity. It is a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved (2001), developed by Bungie."
CEA is a remake and was developed by 343 as well as those other studios you mentioned.
Anyway, I feel like the whole point of your comment was to nitpick what I said instead of actually grasping the point I'm trying to make. The whole point is that letting a new studio with no experience whatsoever with a franchise develop the next big entry is a recipe for disaster. That's why you give them these remaster/remake projects in order to help them familiarise themselves with the franchises. It literally doesn't matter if it's a remaster or a remake, as long as it helps them understand the fundamentals of the franchises. How else would you explain why studios like The Coalition knew how to make Gears of War 4? They just watched playthroughs of the older games on YouTube? Come on. They obviously used the opportunity they were given with GoW UE to learn the ins and outs of the series.
That's what I'm trying to get at and that's why letting a new studio make Dead Space 4 immediately instead of letting them get used to how the series works first would be a very bad idea.
Hell yeah, almost done with the original on Game pass. Really looking forward to it
@LtSarge it's not to nitpick. I think there's a difference.
"How else would you explain why studios like The Coalition knew how to make Gears of War 4?"
Because they actually hired senior staff from Epic who had a long history of working on Gears? And as I said, because they personally developed a remaster of a title that was used as a solid basis for the game they next produced. Again, unlike CEA and Halo 4 which do not share much in the way of game design.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gears_of_War:_Ultimate_Edition
There's a reason the coalition is the only developer cited as creating Gears UE, where as 343i had two other companies assist.
You've pulled this from Wikipedia to say that 343i developed CEA;
"Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is a 2011 first-person shooter video game developed by 343 Industries, Saber Interactive and Certain Affinity. It is a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved (2001), developed by Bungie."
But also on Wikipedia;
"343 Industries, overseers of the Halo franchise, approached Saber Interactive to develop a remake of Halo for the anniversary."
"343 Industries, the internal division, approached Saber Interactive with a proposal to remake Combat Evolved for the game's tenth anniversary."
"343 Industries wanted a complete remake of the original game by the tenth anniversary of Halo's release, giving Saber just over a year to complete the project"
It's not a secret that CEA was an outsourced project (as was most of MCC before it launched), so I'm not sure why this is contentious.
I agree that starting at the beginning is a good idea. I think there's plenty of traps Motive could fall in to going for a full remake (because like the upcoming RE4 remake, it will be heavily judged against the original, and it can be easy to not live up to that) but my point was that these three companies have all taken different approaches. I know they look the same on the surface, but creating a game from scratch, remastering a game, and asking someone else to remaster a game for that, that's vastly different to the one you are making, are not the same.
For the record, out of the three options, I think The Coalition did it right.
@Richnj Okay, there are differences between remasters and remakes. Does that change the fact that tackling these projects means you'll get more experience than you had before? No, it doesn't. So yes, you are nitpicking because you keep dissecting each and every example I give. I don't care that Halo or Gears were bad examples, my point at the end still stands, which is that these projects in general are good because they contribute to more experience in some way or another. And some experience is better than none.
@LtSarge I've said I agree that starting at the beginning is good idea, I just don't agree that one is equal to the others in terms of experience you get.
Not doing the work yourself does not net you experience.
That's not a nitpick, that's a genuine criticism.
Building a brand new game in the form of a remake has more in common with building a brand new entry than it does with a remaster. Because you are building entirely new systems, not exploring the old ones.
That's not a nitpick, that's a genuine criticism.
And honestly, I can think of just as many devs who took an old franchise and didn't start at the beginning.
Fallout, Prey, Crackdown, Wolfenstein, XCOM, Far Cry, Deus Ex.
And their level of success, I feel, comes from having a solid concept, and even a passive understanding of the games they've taken over, and game design, than it does working on a remake. Most of the success stories I know come from new devs doing something differently than the original, or rebooting entirely.
I struggle to think of games that did a pure remake, then had solid success continuing from there. I honestly would be interested if anyone can name some franchises that went that route.
Ironic how EA screwed the franchise over and dissolved Visceral Studio's. Now they're bringing the game back. I'd wager the other 2 games will be re-done as well at some point.
