It's been almost a couple of weeks now since Microsoft unleashed a massive batch of 74 FPS Boosted titles for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, and of that selection, Eurogamer's Digital Foundry has a clear highlight.
To be fair, they've only tested 15 of them, but Shadow of the Tomb Raider easily came out on top, with the team calling it "the most impressive improvement," saying it looks like a "dream" on Xbox Series X in particular:
"Series X is a dream: Xbox One X's 3584x2016 resolution is retained and the vast majority of the game plays out at 60fps or very close to it."
"Shadow of the Tomb Raider arrived at the tail-end of the last generation and looks so good and moves so fluidly, it easily holds its own against proper Series X and PS5 titles, especially as it's paired with a truly phenomenal HDR implementation."
If you haven't been keeping track, the difference with Shadow of the Tomb Raider is that the game was boosted to 60 frames per-second at 4K resolution on Xbox Series X (rather than the previous 30fps), which is why it's so impressive, although Digital Foundry did note in their testing that the game suffers a few performance drops as a result:
"A game that was nigh-on locked to 30fps on Xbox One X isn't quite so solid at 60fps on Series X: there are some performance drops and some high intensity sequences can drop into the 50s and even the late 40s. They're few and far between, but it illustrates that in back-compat mode (which effectively forces RDNA 2 graphics tech to run as turbo-boosted last-gen GCN) the Series X can't quite double Xbox One X performance.
Despite a touch of slowdown though, I feel this is an essential play for Series X users."
You can check out the full rundown of every game Digital Foundry tested from the recent batch in the video above, where the team goes into even more detail about Shadow of the Tomb Raider, calling the upgrade "phenomenal".

Kinda too bad I bought it on PS4. Oh well, I really enjoyed it at the time, and I almost never replay games anyway. This does make me want to purchase games on Xbox rather than Playstation going forward though.
With the FPS boost, I finally decided to get the game. However, waiting for a good discount.
Have Shadow on Steam, but might double dip. Better sitting on the sofa than perched in front of a monitor. Especially when you have a 65" tv.
Nice, I haven't played the Tomb Raider Trilogy yet, All my time is going to be toward Mass Effect now.. But can't wait to get around to playing it..
I own two Tomb Raider games from the year end sale..... which ones...who knows? Did they add the FPS boost to just this one TR title or all of them?
@Krzzystuff In terms of the modern rebooted trilogy, the first and third games have received FPS Boosts so far.
I had Shadow of the Tomb raider on PS4, but am seriously considering double-dipping if I can get it cheap enough. I’ve already double-dipped with Dying light. These FPS boosts are really giving old games a new lease of life.
A shame it's the worst of the trilogy. I'd pay big bucks for a proper Series X remake of the three games though.
In fairness to it holding its own with current PS5 and Series X titles shows how exclusives for these consoles are not around yet and the consoles power has not been used anywhere near capacity.
I think it’s more a situational position where next generation is new, covid and development cost of bringing a full AAA title next generation when the install base is so low currently aided by shortages.
Financially develop a game for around 12 million consoles when you can develop for nearly 200 million cross generation consoles.
@Dezzy70 true. I think any new games just being started will be the showpiece games as anything in development before was for last gen anyways. All this built from the ground up for next gen has been a clear marketing lie... they were just planning on making last gen games next gen exclusives to push hardware adoption.
@Krzzystuff
Being honest as much as I want a true next generation AAA series x exclusive, my business mind says it probably doesn’t make financial sense. It will be Microsoft that have to do it as they can take the hit and it is their series x console that they want to sell.
I may just go ahead and start this up since I’m in between games at the moment!
I recently finished the first Tomb Raider with FPS Boost and AutoHDR and it was like a new game.
I remember playing this on my original Xbox One with Kinect and in terms of performance, it was pretty awful.
For anyone who doesn't have these games, check key sellers, as you can get the trilogy for £17.99 vs £45.99 on the Xbox Store.
I'm confused about why some titles like Shadow of the Tomb Raider get BOTH the Xbox X Enhanced 4k (or close to it) upgrade AND the 60 fps boost, while others have to have the standard Xbox One S 1080p (or lower) profile.
Frustrating that it isn't always an upgrade though choice is usually good.
@blinx01 Frustrating that Rise of the Tomb Raider isn't on the list yet, or Dishonored 2, yet the third game in both series IS boosted. It's even more stark to jump back to 30fps. Hopefully soon.
