We're not here to start a console war with PlayStation or anything, but we have to point out that the new next-gen version of Marvel's Avengers is a much easier upgrade on Xbox Series X|S thanks to Smart Delivery and cloud saves.
With Xbox Smart Delivery, all you need to do is download and launch the new version of the game. On PlayStation, however, you're required to patch Marvel's Avengers to its latest PS4 version, launch the PS4 version and upload your game save, download the PS5 version of the game, and then download your game save from within there.
As you can imagine, these tweets got a lot of attention after they were posted on social media yesterday, with both Xbox and PlayStation fans pointing out the longwinded nature of the upgrade instructions.
Ultimately, it led to a lot of praise for Xbox's Smart Delivery feature on Xbox Series X and S, which so far doesn't appear to have run into any major roadblocks, whereas PlayStation has had a few instances of temporary upgrade issues.
How are you finding Smart Delivery on Xbox Series X and S? Let us know down below.

This is one of those Xbox series x quality of life design items I keep going on about.
The quality of life design of the Xbox series x console and firmware is way beyond the PS5.
The PS5 from a quality of life design point, has taken steps backwards from the PS4.
I won’t list the Xbox better ones, but there is a least 5 great quality of life designs there over the PS5.
PS5 was poorly designed. I still feel like they adjusted on the fly once the knew about the 12TF and that's why you have the boost mode, a kitchen sink for a heat sink and untested liquid metal. Was a factor in my switch to Xbox. They will definitely be launching a new version that is actually thought out in a year or two. I still can see a future where PlayStation is just a publisher in the gaming industry. They don't make a profit on consoles and with the extra competition this time around i don't know if they ever will this generation. Imagine...GOW day n date in gamepass lol.
And they say Smart Delivery is only a marketing term.
I’m going to list them can’t help it.
Smaller form factor size.
No stands and bolt messing about.
External fast ssd upgrade.
External storage of series games on normal hard drive.
UI more intelligent and easy to use, things added from last generation not taken away.
Smart delivery.
Cloud save cross generation and automatic and included for all signed into the console.
I don't play the game but it seems the feature make the process much simpler and easier. Smh there is no reason for sony to not making the equivalent of smart delivery for PS5.
I think Smart Delivery is just something we take for granted, yet so much work has obviously gone into it behind the scenes.
Sony have just left it all for the devs to figure out, which has had mixed results so far.
@Dezzy70 Couldn't agree more, and this is coming from somebody who has owned both (and has sold their PS5). Xbox deserves more credit for their quality of life features that are well beyond what the PS5 offers in similar areas. Not being a fanboy at all. It's just fact. Sony taking so many steps backwards with their UI for no good reason was a big reason why I left the brand.
While game file sizes are generally larger on Xbox, the ease of being able to upgrade games and manage your storage space are two of the biggest advantages Xbox has.
I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for Sony to update things.
You should see the fun you can have with their tv updates.
They have even released their top end OLED 2021 A90J.
This year with only 2 HDMI 2:1 sockets and one of them earc takes up for sound bars etc.
LG and Samsung top end models 2021 have 4 full HDMI 2:1 sockets.
Sony you can suck sometimes.
@KilloWertz
Sold my PS5 as well and kept the series x and got 2 years game pass ultimate as well.
The console and quality of life design make it such a joy to use.
Shame about the file size, though - 106GB on SX vs 74GB on PS5, IIRC.
@helbertpina
I can live with that we get more ssd memory to start with and it is also easy plug in externally to expand the ssd memory
Also I can off load series x games to any external hard drive to store and load back onto to ssd memory.
Quality of life, is series x. So simple.
I agree, Series X is such a user-friendly console and Microsoft is always trying to improve things even more while the UI of PS5 is lacking, Sony doesn't take responsibility over upgrading problems and the hardware itself seems quite rushed like the overclocked GPU and the huge and weird design, not to mention the changes in the retail hardware, e.g., the fans, compared to the better quality of the units sent to the youtubers. I have my games on the external HDD and I only copy to the internal SSD the Series X/S games that I want to play. It's simple and easy on Series X/S.
I’m not going to rag on Sony. But I’m sick of having to explain save files and how they work on Xbox and why it’s just easier. Or why it’s easier for devs just patch things.
This very clearly shows that cross-generation was an after thought on Sony's side. I mean, Sony even said it "believes in generations".
When major publishers started to show support for Smart Delivery (barring a very small few) and touted free upgrades, achievement transfer, and save file transfer, THEN Sony broke silence and games started getting free upgrades - albeit in the form of having to "claim" a completely separate game from the PlayStation store.
I am enjoying the PS5, but Sony took very a "Nintendo"-esque approach to certain features.
@helbertpina
That because Sony are using Oodle Kraken, a compression technique, that lowers file sizes up to 29% compared to ZLIB, which is what Xbox is using.
I think Control also used this on PS5.
It is nice knowing if I buy this game, I'll have an easy time upgrading to Series X.
But but but Sony ponies said smart delivery was just a gimmick
@Bmartin001
Sony fans say everything is a gimmick on the series consoles because they don’t have these good quality of life design features.
If you look at Sony’s console hardware and firmware it was either rushed or the whole design department had heavy day on the smoke 😂
The biggest problem with Sony is their ignorance in regards to their customers, with almost all focus on playing PS5 games and almost ignoring the fact that loads of great PS4 games could benefit from the power of Next Gen. That is true to more areas also, so if you do not follow the Sony way you will get punished!
It just works.
Backwards compatibility and upgrades like this were an afterthought for Sony it’s blatantly obvious. I doubt Sony would have even considered it if it wasn’t for Microsoft committing to it so strongly. The Xbox has a clear advantage with things like FPS boost, smart delivery and auto HDR, every feature is brilliant and a little under appreciated I feel.
The PS5 still feels unfinished, forces garbage HDR onto non compatible games and has no internal memory expansion available yet, as well as having to do silly messing around like with this game just to carry on playing on your account.
“This is how you upgrade on Xbox” needs to be a short commercial like the “This is how you share games on PS” from last gen.
Been reading an article on the 'other site' that the load times for next gen have gone from over a minute to just 4 seconds. That's absolutely crazy. Really is a window into the future of this generation of instant load times. This improvement for me is much better than any other improvements.
I can empathise. This was tedious on Spider-man, though i'm glad it was there.
Much easier on Xbox.
Who isn’t playing on the fully updated version... “longwinded” it’s boot old version game and click... boot new version and click.
If that’s long winded some of you must really struggle at life.
I love smart delivery but let’s not pretend a couple of clicks when upgrading a game is a big deal.
Smart delivery for not so smart humans?
@helbertpina shsssh people don’t want balance here there just wanna hate on the bit of plastic they don’t own.
Those of us that own both need our own website free of people that say “pony” and “ponies”
Kids eh?!?
That’s a massive difference in file size. I’d take a two click “long winded” upgrading to save 30gb
@Stocksy it's 2021 people are lazy & impatient
It’s cool it’s 30 GB less. Makes up for Call of Duty being 250GB on PlayStation I guess.
@Stocksy well apparently the senior editor of Forbes was having an issue with the upgrade process for PS5, and it had nothing to do with his intelligence level. If you want look up Paul Tassi’s Twitter feed yesterday.
Because the process is more steps and there was a glitch in the way it works; a lot of PS5 owners couldn’t upgrade.
I dunno seems like if it was easier altogether the glitch wouldn’t have happened.
My two cents.
Reminds me of why I sold my PS4 a few years ago and jumped ship to Xbox. There are so many significant little customer-friendly features with the Xbox that the PS lacks. Most of Sony’s offerings seem anti-customer by comparison.
@helbertpina @Stocksy
Fun Fact: you can cold store Series games on external drives. You can’t do that on PS, you know that right?
Yet playstation continues to outsell again because to the majority this feature means nothing just like how fast the ps5 loads games means nothing to most of you.
Sony went with features that they knew wouldn't effect sales even though we would all want those missing features they still wasn't deal breakers as iis why its still the most wanted new tech at the moment.
Before "hating" on me I will admit the xbox has been more consumer friendly this gen and has better accessibility options and features but I'm just saying they aren't system sellers to the average consumer.
One downside of smart update is there doesn’t seem to be a way to get these updated xbox versions to media ahead of time which means when the update hits the news cycle is all about the PS5 update because that was able to be sent ahead of time to Digital foundry ect.
So all the footage shown and talk about it is PS5 based which kinda sucks the oxygen out of things for team green. If Xbox is mentioned at its ‘and xbox gets an update too’ tacked on to the end. I know it’s a little thing, but this is how mind share is won.
Last summer the reverse was true. With Xbox showing their games first every next gen discussion or video was illustrated with Xbox game footage because that’s literally all there was to show, even when talking about PS5. I think that really helped Xbox get to the great place they’re in today.
Having both consoles the Xbox save/upgrade features are easier to use, and the software/UI experience is far more matured on the Xbox systems.
The PS5 UI looks great, but there have been a lot of issues and the Sony backend sorely needs some upgrading/investment over front end.
IMO
The PS5 upgrade system desperately needs looking at.
That said I dont think its going to have much impact on sales so I cant see them being in any rush.
@Krzzystuff When Sony leaves the console market, expect Game pass quality to drop and its price to rise to $30 per month. We need Sony and Microsoft in the market to compete for our money. If we make it too easy for one or the other, they will take advantage of us.
@Dezzy70 I have 3 years of Game Pass Ultimate. Haha...
That doesn't really matter. Seriously though, you are definitely right again. It's been really pleasant since switching. It really almost feels like a weight was lifted off my shoulders after my Series X arrived.
Obviously I should have just went with the Series X from the start, but oh well. Better a few months late than never I guess.
Hopefully Microsoft gets the credit they deserve at some point for what they've done with the Series X in comparison to the many puzzling choices Sony made with the PS5. Actually, the big turnaround started with the One X, but hopefully the Series X will get more attention so people realize.
@KilloWertz
Xbox is definitely on the right track now, especially also after recent studio purchases.
Now they need to get some AAA big exclusive hitters out the door from their studios, taking advantage of the series x power.
When that happens on a regular basis I think they can hit a good stride and momentum.
Covid won’t help the studios but hoping for something special by end of this year.
@UltimateOtaku91
No need to hate on you, you have a valid point.
The only thing I would say the load times are almost similar and doesn’t do much for me.
Sony are on great momentum from the PS4 and their exclusives going into PS5 and that’s seen in sales and started PS5 with some good exclusive games.
It’s one thing missing from Xbox at the moment, but I think Xbox mean business after recent studio purchases and in time will improve vastly.
After this generation who knows what the future will bring.
@UltimateOtaku91 pfft why would anyone hate on you? You didn’t go after anyone and made a fair point =p
Yes Sonys got a great machine but it’s not perfect. Neither is Xbox but it’s nice sometimes to appreciate the things MS does do better.
@NotoriousWhiz very true. Competition is key as it's the only reason why Xbox made the moves they did for this gen.
I sold my PS5 as well. It got bricked with less than 30h of use. Sony didnt want to provide me a new one and created a lot of difficulties for me to send it for repair in the middle of a chaotic breakdown in the health system in Brazil. I finally got a Series X and I AM SO HAPPY. Game pass is a game changer. PS5 is so flawed that even the fact that the xbox can stand still without a faulty plastic support makes me smile.
@UltimateOtaku91 at this point in time, the only reason PS5 outsells Xbox Series is because they started manufacturing earlier and with older tech that (most likely) let's them manufacture faster.
Truth is right now, both consoles are impossible to find, and only stock determines why either sells more.
Personally, I was a PS4 gamer last gen, and what MS offered convinced me to go Xbox this gen. I still will get a PS5 just as I still had a One X, but this time it will be XBox where I play all multi-plat games.
@unbridledhopebr how on earth you managed to sell a bricked PS5?
I admittedly didn't think much of smart delivery when it was first announced but seeing first hand the issues going from PS4 to PS5 versions, Microsoft was really on point with it. Kudos to them for being much more forward thinking on this particular issue!
@UltimateOtaku91 In fairness, it's the strength of the PS brand that sells the consoles, not the features.
It's like iPhones. Nowhere near the best, and definitely not worth their cost, but for the uninformed consumer, that branding and the need to have what their peers have, is just too great.
@Stocksy
thats a one way street, god forbid you have the old ps4 in the bedroom and want to play the game there too /s
With a xbox I can play on several consoles/xcloud and just continue where I stopped at the last device
Needlessly complicated on PS5, Sony needs to sort that crap out. Has to be annoying for the devs/publishers of third party games too, they end up being the ones who have to explain all this stuff.
For info: if you ever need to go back and continue a game on an Xbox One, the save also works backwards too. Smart Delivery is pretty awesome - and Sony definitely scrambled to get something together when they realised it.
I’ve also noticed with Destiny 2 cross save I have issues moving from Series X to PS5 where I have to reboot but from PS5 to Series X it just plain works.
