Here's a pleasant surprise we weren't expecting! To coincide with the release of Sea of Thieves' new Seasons system, the latest update for the game adds a 120FPS performance mode on Xbox Series X.
The news is buried at the bottom of the patch notes for the update, as detailed below:
"On the Xbox Series X console, a performance mode is available supporting 120Hz at 1080p. Some TVs do not support 120Hz and HDR simultaneously, so HDR may need to be disabled from the Console Settings."
In terms of content, Season One introduces a three-month long array of new gameplay features, rewards and live Events - including a new Plunder Pass - with the full release notes available on the Sea of Thieves website.

Honestly, I wish they'd add a quality mode to drop it back down to 30FPS. The 60FPS upgrade with the series x introduced SOOOOO much screen tearing that wasn't there before (my TV doesn't have VRR). Yes, it looks much smoother at 60FPS, but the screen tearing drives me nuts.
@nprtmn4evr One thing I has been disappointing with the Series X|S release is that screen tearing has seems to have made a comeback. A lot of games seem to have it now - I am guess for the sake of "smooth" gameplay.
Either force V-sync when VRR is disabled, or make a "Force V-sync" a selectable system option with the caveat that some games may exhibit stutter. I can't stand screen tear and I would rather have slight stutters.
@nprtmn4evr is it that bad? I played Valhalla briefly on PS5 and it was awful for it. I don't know why they are so afraid to drop resolution to ensure smooth performance, apart from the idiots on Twitter who seem to think "native 4K" is gods gift to gaming
@GamingFan4Lyf For XB, devs seem to be relying on the VRR crutch that basically "the tech exists, so if it bothers you so much, go buy it." It's kind of annoying, and I doubt VRR TVs will be in more than 50% of homes by the end of the gen. Heck, my screen supports Freesync, but not VRR, but I can't use it because HDMI switches/repeaters don't support it. And none of them support VRR/2.1 yet, so even if I had a screen that supported it, I still couldn't use it until i replace every piece of HDMI equipment on the chain. It's just not going to be viable as a standard for some time.
That said, I think I'd rather have smooth and tearing versus stutters.
@carlos82 There are times when it’s fine and looks great, but when there’s a lot of movement or a lot of effects (say during PvP or an island with waterfalls) the screen tearing is pretty constant.
I’d be happy if they allowed a 30fps option for those who would rather not have screen tearing.
This is awesome! I’ll take 1080p/120fps over 4K/60fps every time
@NEStalgia Probably why a "Force V-sync" would be a great option - that way people who aren't sensitive to it can keep the tearing!
I've had tremendous visual consistency on SoT on XSX but you all have piqued my curiosity and I will try to find some "high traffic" areas tonight and test. I run Xbox on a few years old Samsung KS8000, so it isn't top of the line but has been a decent living room set.
@Zochmenos Crook’s Hollow causes the screen tear a lot, along with pretty much every island in the Devil’s Roar since the geysers start going off.
@nprtmn4evr Another reason to not go to the Roar, lol. Thanks for the info tho. I'll check em out.
