Of all the crossovers we ever thought we might see in the world of Xbox, Madden NFL 21 and SpongeBob wasn't one of them. Nevertheless, that's exactly what's happened in the game's 6v6 backyard mode, The Yard.
The crossover brings all-new content to The Yard, such as new game modes and a new location, but many fans certainly haven't taken to it too kindly, venting their frustration with the bizarre addition on Twitter.
In general, fans aren't criticising the new game modes and location itself, but rather that EA is spending time bringing SpongeBob into the game rather than focusing on key areas and fan requests such as "fixing" Franchise Mode.
What are your thoughts on the SpongeBob crossover for Madden NFL 21? Tell us in the comments.

I dunno, I love it to be honest. Completely wrong priorities but it’s so ridiculous that it totally works.
@Kefka2589 I like Madden and Spongebob. It’s a win win for me
What’s with all the weird crossovers in games? Hot Wheels/Lego in Forza, wrestlers in Gears 5 and now this. Hate to say it but they were all fun so perhaps this will be
@WesEds It's called shameless plug. These companies throw money at developers and developers don't give a ***** as long as the money is coming in.
So glad I gave up on Madden long ago. I just play Mutant Football League for my football fix.
@Tasuki surely its the publishers and not the devs. I’m a developer, albeit in a different field, and I still have principles that I stick to. Sometimes the business makes decisions that developers have to act on, even though it’s against personal beliefs or personal ethics.
Having said that, this is EA. No, you’re right. I imagine the Madden team at EA comprises of people content to copy and paste code every year.
That Pawn Stars meme cracks me the f*ck up. 😆
@Kefka2589
Actually at the end of Doom (the movie), The Rock goes evil & then “Dredd” has to take him down. Lol.
Yes, it’s sad that I know this. It’s even sadder that I have watched that awful Doom film several times. 🤦♂️ 😂
As a Madden owner, this is ridiculous. Of course, I should expect this nonsense by now from EA Sports.
not a fan of the game, but Spongebob needs to return to his pineapple under the sea. he just doesn't belong in the NFL. i might allow him in a game of pac-man, but only to be eaten. if he appears in Super Smash brothers than he might get killed and as funny as it might be, i don't think we want a dead sponge on the battle field.
