Microsoft has announced today that it will be expanding its refund policy to offer refunds for anyone who bought Cyberpunk 2077 from the digital Xbox Store, available via the Xbox refund page on the Xbox Support website.
In a statement on Twitter, the company explained it wanted to "ensure that every player can get the experience they expect on Xbox", acknowledging "some players have been unhappy with the current experience on older consoles."
"To ensure that every player can get the experience they expect on Xbox, we will be expanding our existing refund policy to offer full refunds to anyone who purchased Cyberpunk 2077 digitally from the Microsoft Store, until further notice.
While we know the developers at CD PROJEKT RED have worked hard to ship Cyberpunk 2077 in extremely challenging circumstances, we also realize that some players have been unhappy with the current experience on older consoles.
To date, we have granted refunds to the vast majority of customers who have requested one. To request an Xbox refund for Cyberpunk 2077, please follow the steps listed on our Xbox refund page."
The response arrives on the same day that PlayStation decided to temporarily remove Cyberpunk 2077 from its digital store, but it looks like Microsoft isn't intending to follow suit by doing the same thing on the Xbox Store.
What do you make of this decision and this statement? Let us know in the comments.

I got the one X special edition console - and considering that was a steal at £259 , I got the game for free. I wonder if someone with that console bundle could get a refund?
(I wouldn't want to personally)
@FraserG do we know how digital gift refunds are handled? Does the refund go back to the original buyer or credit to the gift recipient?
This is likely going to be a major question come christmas day.
Would suck someone requests a refund on their chtismas gift and are left with nothing, and very awkward to bring it up to the person that gifted it.
@Tharsman There's been no official word in this case (yet), but I believe in normal circumstances if you gift someone a game, and they choose to refund it, the refund goes back to the buyer.
They say 2 months of patches will fix it up but I bet it'll be at least a few more than that before it's okay.
No word on refunds for copies bought through services like GreenManGaming. They are refusing to refund me.
@tharsman In the US, Microsoft refunded the money back to my credit card. I got my money back and didn't just get store credit.
Good move by Microsoft here. 👍🏻
Good move I think. I have no problem with them not removing it as long as the refund option is available. After PC, Series X is meant to the best place to play Cyberpunk so anyone who wants to download and play it there still can if they want I guess.
@hallower1980 did you receive the game as a digital gift or did you buy it for someone else?
I really hope a lot of people refund the game. Send a message you know.
With that said, I'm keeping my copy and totally enjoying it. Bugs and all.
@tharsman Ah, sorry. I misread your comment. My purchase was not a gift.
I would guess that they refund the card of whoever puchased it. But Microsoft probably requires the buyer, rather than the recipient, to request the refund.
Well this should silence the angry haters at least. I definitely won't be seeking a refund as I have been enjoying the game and I am fine waiting for further patches. I mean it's just your typical Elder Scrolls/Fallout experience really, huge ambitious open world FPS RPG that has lots of bugs that need to be fixed, I think a lot of people have already forgotten about how buggy games like Skyrim were when they launched.
I guess waiting until they release the real next gen version was the right call. By that time they should have fixed all the bugs too. But in retrospective they maybe should have focussed on exclusive next gen versions. It feel like they squeezed too much out of the old boys.
@Lupaie79 It's basically a GTAV style release, being late last-gen title won't effect it's ability to be a great next-gen title.
So, gamepass by February, then?
My friend played tried to play it on his Sony device. He claimed that Sony is censoring all the xxx parts , by making his device crash at those points in the game. He also said violence is over the top.
@CRANIAL your friend is a fool, the game just runs like ***** and the violence isnt any more then any other game...hell if anything the amount of violence is less then GTA and RED DEAD
