The Xbox Series S launches alongside the Xbox Series X on November 10th for just £249 / $299, and it'll still be able to support frame rates of up to 120fps - in fact, Microsoft has already proved it.
In the timestamped video above (it begins at 6:04), you can see actual footage of Gears 5 running at 120fps on the lower-spec next-gen system. Admittedly, the video itself can only play back at 60fps on YouTube, but the tech on the screen clearly shows that it's hitting a solid 120fps in this example.
Developer The Coalition describes the move to 120fps for Gears 5 multiplayer as a "huge leap forward", and that its added smoothness and responsiveness come without any compromise to visual quality.
Looking forward to playing Gears 5 at 120fps on Xbox Series S / X? Let us know in the comments below.

This is the unoptimised version probably, according to a recent Digitalfoundry video. Imagine how better it will look after getting the next-gen features.
During a recent Inside Unreal livestream, Gears 5 developer The Coalition revealed some of the new visual features coming to the Xbox Series X version of the game. Many of these are borrowed from the PC Ultra spec set, including…
Higher resolution textures
Improved anisotropic filtering
Higher-resolution volume fog
Higher quality depth of field
Extremely far draw distances with high level of object detail
Shadow resolution and shadow distance
High-quality screen-space reflections
Post processing improvements like bloom, lens flare, light shafts, ect.
That said, The Coalition is also working on some new next-gen features, including Screen Space Global Illumination, higher particle counts, and yes, the ability to play MP at up to 120fps.
Contact Shadows
This allows extremely realistic shadowing as each pixel on screen traces back to the light source to eliminate any shadow biasing artifacts or fill in missing shadows.
Screen Space Global Illumination
Integrated from UE4 4.24 this feature allows us to achieve full realtime GI at 4K/60fps.
SSGI's AO pass replaces the more traditional SSAO giving a much more naturalistic broad real-time AO.
Higher particle counts
Our particle counts are 50% higher than PC Ultra spec.
Real-Time Cinematics in 4K 60fps
Xbox One X cinematics were 4K 30fps
That's great, I hope they can get Gears Of War Ultimate Edition at 120FPS
@Z3u5000 You mean the graphics aren't improved ?
@BrilliantBill Yes they will bring next-gen only features.
Is 120fps gameplay a huge improvement over 60fps? I know it's double the frames but how noticeable actually is it when you're playing? Is it marginally smoother to the eye, or is it such a huge improvement that it's hard to go back to 60fps?
@OorWullie It’s a huge competitive advantage in multiplayer scenarios believe it or not. Ask any PC gamer or you can watch the recent Nvidia event for evidence. Eyes can easily notice the difference.
@Z3u5000 Something I always see people leave out. Ultra is not the highest setting for Gears 5 on PC. Either way, I look forward to the updates on PC too.
@Menchi Those new features are not available in any PC settings available right now. This is coming from the actual developers.
@OorWullie I've been playing almost everything for the last 6 years at 120fps, and I hate 60 at this point. It's noticeably slower after coming back.
Just want to see Halo MCC in 120fps.
@OorWullie I watched my friend play Halo 3 on PC, and it was super smooth. He wasn't sure what fps he was getting, but the difference to the image quality was very noticeable.
@Z3u5000 Right, but when they posted that info weeks ago, I was always curious why the devs specifically said ultra settings, when ultra is not max.
@OorWullie its quite a big improvement - not just visually but also in the way the game feels to play. Its much more responsive as it reduces input lag too because the game is refreshing significantly faster - in other words, its checking and enacting on your input 120x every second so you have less delay between each. Of course the game 'looks' smoother too at high frame rates but as each frame is only 8.33ms compared to 16.66ms with 60fps (or 33.33ms for 30fps), you can really feel the difference...
Only question I have is Mike Rayner 🤔 male or female?
If your tv only displays 60hz do you get the benefits of 120fps?
Absolutely impressive.
@OorWullie The best thing about this is that 60 FPS is guaranteed, with some games or modes targeting 120 FPS on both Series X and Series S.
Very impressive.
Bodes well for Gears 6.
@Menchi @Richnj @BAMozzy @TheNewButler @BlueOcean
Cheers for the replies guys. I meant to get back to you earlier. I've only owned Nintendo consoles for the last 20 years, so the next gen consoles with 120fps and 4k, are surely going to blow me away.
@OorWullie it is indeed. Once you experience de 120fps (or higher) playing 60fps becomes painfull. I'm a PC gamer used to 144hz screens and this is the best thing of the new gen consoles, finally 120fps
