If you've been hoping to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on your Xbox One over the past 24 hours, you'll likely have run into a sizeable update - the latest one clocks in at a massive 66GB, despite only being 1GB on PS4.
Infinity Ward says the reason for this is due to an "unforeseen bug with the Microsoft patch delivery process," meaning that the download requires Xbox users to redownload files they already have.
This is made all the more irritating due to the fact that it's not actually a big update - it simply addresses a few bugs, along with fixing the the issue of weapon models corrupting on screen. That's not much for a 66GB download!
Fortunately, the developer says it's working closely with Microsoft to ensure that future updates are smaller in size, and you don't need to worry about the game taking up an extra 66GB on your Xbox's hard drive as the latest update doesn't impact the overall install size. You might be waiting a while for it to complete though!
Have you run into this update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare? Let us know in the comments.

This must be the biggest bug in history 😂.
Were gonna need a bigger hard drive
@BlueOcean
Sony probably gave Activi$ion 100 million dollars to make the Xbox patch 65 gb. 😂
Do people still play COD?
@KelticDevil Microsoft has a history of bugs in their package patching. I don't know how similar Xbox is to Windows Store patching so I may be rambling nonsense. And for Microsoft's weaknesses, they have a lot of strengths. Sony does not have a hypervisor that back compat emulation is built on top of. Microsoft does because Xbox built on top of what was made for Windows. I know from experience patching software is complicated, Sony doesn't need to pay people to do that. Maybe they'll pay to have Nathan Drake in FIFA.
Can't wait for the next COD game. The ultimate edition is going to come with its own external HDD.
@Vincent294
Haha to the Nathan Drake comment. 👍🏻
@Nexozi
I know, right?!! Warzone eats up a ridiculous amount of hard drive space.
@KelticDevil wow man what is your problem with Sony, every article you comment on you take a dig at sony even if the article has nothing to do with Sony...
You have sony on the brain, are you really that Butt Hurt that xbox keeps losing every generation, maybe your jealous of sonys 1st party mega hits or maybe your the biggest fanboy out there that you just can't help it
@KelticDevil I know, it's insane! They said they going to be giving people a free upgrade for the series X. I think most ppl will turn it down. It'll take up the whole of the extra drive you can add to the system. 😂
@Vincent294 I think I can remember seeing a slide from a talk or something that says the xbox one has 3 layers to it.
Hypervisor
Windows
Xbox one OS
I belive that is why they've found backwards compatability easier than Sony. They just have a 360 VM running on the hypervisor. More recently the OG xbox OS. The problem is licencing to get the games to be playable.
@sandman89 what's ur go to multiplayer fps shooter?
Maybe I’m reaching too much but.... maybe a smart delivery bug and this is leaking that Modern Warfare will get smart delivery optimizations on Series X?
@Tharsman they have said that they will be updating MW for series X. Hoping it'll be a free update, but knowing them they'll probably charge for it. Though this would be a bit early to release the patch for it. Though could be as you say getting ready for it. As the last patch they released did apparently do some house keeping. I guess it would be good if they give people the option to remove it if they're not planning on getting the series X. I can't wait for November though.
@Nexozi my understanding for smart delivery is that it would patch each version separately. A smart delivery patch would not be a patch to the Xbox One game, since the point is each console gets only the files it needs.
Possibly (me theorizing) it requires flipping configuration settings on the game profile that could be bugged still and cause every single file to require re-patching. That would be good news as it would mean the upgrade would be the user friendliest version.
@Tharsman yes smart delivery should only give you access to the files that you need for the Xbox you are playing on. That's why we were saying the bug is it's given everyone the series X upgrade data by mistake. So hopefully they're able to give people the opportunity to delete the excessive data they don't need. As they have actively promoted deleting data for the game modes you don't use to free up space. If it's nothing to do with the series X upgrade then it's a crazy useless patch as I was playing after it installed and noticed no difference.
So.....
If I play this game for the campaign only (yes, I am one of those guys), does anyone know if I have to install Warzone & all it’s crazy high gb patches?
@Nexozi A few months ago I was on battlefield one every night. Really enjoyed that game
@Nexozi I’m currently playing through halo reach. I’m gonna go through all halo games before infinite comes out. I think I’ll have enough time especially now it’s delayed. I’m generally more into single player shooters.
@sandman89 I couldn't get into battlefield one. Really wanted to as I had heard good things about it. I want to play through all the halo games too. There's most likely loads I've forgotten since I last played them.
