If you had plans to team up with a party of random adventurers when Minecraft Dungeons is released on the Xbox One and Xbox Game Pass service next month, you'll need to find a workaround.
The official FAQ over on the Minecraft website reveals it won't include online matchmaking support, and there's no mention of it being added to the dungeon crawler in the near future, either. You will, however, still be able to play online with your friends and anyone you decide to add to your friend list.
WILL THERE BE ONLINE MATCHMAKING?
No. Minecraft Dungeons is designed to be played together with your friends – either on a comfy couch or in a comfy online session.
Obviously, this is a different approach to the games Minecraft Dungeons has been inspired by, such as Diablo III - which does allow players to team up with randoms over the internet via matchmaking.
The same FAQ also goes onto explain how the game won't support cross-play on release, but it will be patched in as a free update in the future. This means on top of having to be friends to play with other people online, you'll also need to be running the game on the same system.

Strange, considering crossplay was something talked about during the announcement, correct? Oh well, as long as I can have 2 people on my one x and one person on my s, we're good to go.
I would have a problem if you couldn't play with friends, but not this. After all, a lot of kids are going to be online, and uncouth players abound. Looking forward to play Dungeons.
This is strange omission considering the type of game it is.
