You'll be able to buy one copy of Assassin's Creed Valhalla later this year and play it on either Xbox One or the new Xbox Series X. Ubisoft is utilising Microsoft's 'Smart Delivery' feature with the console to allow players to purchase the Xbox One version of the game and get a free next-gen upgrade.
This has been confirmed in a listing on Amazon, which states the following:
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla leverages the Smart Delivery technology - buy the game once and play it on either Xbox One or Xbox Series X when both the console and that version of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla are available.
Assassin's Creed Valhalla is the latest game to leverage the service after CD Projekt Red confirmed earlier this year that Cyberpunk 2077 will also be taking part in it. Needless to say we're pretty excited about the customer-focused feature, and we're hopeful many developers and publishers will continue to get on board.

I probably won't buy the game, but great to know that Smart Delivery is being accepted by another big third-party developer/publisher for a major title.
I had little faith that major companies would adopt it since cross-generation is a perfect time to milk customers.

This is really nice. First, CD Projekt and now Ubisoft, two of the biggest third parties. Imagine Nintendo discussing this... LOL
Oh that's good to know. The more bigger companies like Ubisoft do this, the bigger the PR disaster it will be when others don't do it
I was going to wait for Series X version, but with this news I'll get digital on Xbox One X and play again on Series X when it releases ^^.
I won't be using Smart Delivery. I'll just play it day one on Series X. I want that to be my first and only experience with Valhalla.

Is it fair to assume smart delivery is exclusive to digitally purchased games?
@Emob It doesn't look like it because I found the above statement on Amazon for the retail version of Assassin's Creed Valhalla.
That would suggest it's both digital and physical copies...
