After a bunch of rumours and game ratings going around throughout the day, Microsoft has finally revealed that Age of Empires is making its long-awaited console debut! Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition hits Xbox Series X and S on January 31, 2023, with Age of Empires IV to follow at some stage later on next year.
The Age of Empires 2 remaster has been out on PC since late 2019, and its reception on Steam has been great so far! The Definitive Edition has almost 100k reviews on the platform, amounting to a "very positive" rating overall. Here's what to expect from the game when it hits Xbox next January:
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition celebrates the 20th anniversary of one of the most popular strategy games ever, now with stunning 4K Ultra HD graphics, and a fully remastered soundtrack. Age of Empires II: DE features “The Last Khans” with 3 new campaigns and 4 new Civilizations. Frequent updates include events, additional content, new game modes, and enhanced features with the recent addition of Co-Op mode!
Following on from AoE 2, Microsoft is bringing the fourth game in the series to consoles as well! For now, we don't have a more specific release window than "2023" for Age of Empires 4, but here's a gameplay trailer from the PC launch, showcasing the game in action:

If they’re not coming to the one that means the XSX finally has first party console exclusives. Took them 2 years but it happened.
@darkswabber flight sim is also next gen xbox exclusive.
Sweet.. loved age of the empires as a kid
Very excited I really want to go back to AOE. Just wonder how they’ll manage controls.
Finally! Definitely up for some AoE action on my Series X 🙂
@darkswabber Looks like II will come to the One and IV will be S/X exclusive
I'll definitely be playing this. Haven't played one in years
This is an exciting announcement. Hopefully 1, 3 and Mythology follow after for console meanwhile PC gets more of those essential 1st party Xbox exclusives like the rest of the 360 Gears games, Rare Replay and Halo 5.
Finally the news we were waiting for. Can't wait to play them on console. Aoe 2 and 3 I spent so many hours on in the past, so hope 3 will get a port too soon.
I’ll wait to see how it plays with a controller, but otherwise interested!
Omg FINALLY! A decent reason to justify the upgrade. So happy!
With mouse and keyboard support this will be awesome, without it, not so much!
Curious how they will make this work but this is awesome news!
This is good news I wouldn't mind to see 1 and 3 in there too, despite having them on steam
Well that's the first half of 2023 gone. With the definitive edition of the game coming, then that's more campaigns than one could ever need.
A shame MS didn't get this out this year to plug the 1st party release drought but better late than never. Can't wait.
Now I can play it. My potato PC can't run it even at 240p 10fps.
With mouse and Keyboard on Series X this will be a great addition.
This is great news! Haven’t been able to play an AoE game in a long time! Definitely happy to connect a keyboard and mouse but keen to see what gamepad support will be like.
@Grumblevolcano Apparently they're updating AOE: Definitive Edition to the same engine as AOE II: Definitive Edition, so I suspect we'll see that come to consoles after the engine upgrade.
Hopefully has controller support and they're not setting precedence for input exclusive games.
My PC is for mouse and keyboard by Xbox is for controllers.
Great news. Hope they get mouse support.
@InterceptorAlpha it’s it in their article but in the Gematsu one https://www.gematsu.com/2022/10/age-of-empires-ii-definitive-edition-coming-to-xbox-series-and-xbox-one-on-january-31-2023-age-of-empires-iv-in-2023
“we had to approach carefully and thoughtfully,” said World’s Edge director of customer voice Emm Bridle on Xbox Wire. “The team has been working hard to bring an experience that not only feels great using a controller, but also teaches players how to play on Xbox. A new tutorial designed specifically for controller input paired with a new user experience for console”
Well apparently both games got keyboard and mouse input on console, so that's great news....
This is great news but im curious why 1 and 3 arent been released.
@TheIronChimp 1 is on a different engine and schedule to undergo an overhaul we’re it be moved to the engine 2 is on. No clue about 3.
Getting ready to buy a Razer Turret 🤩
