Xbox boss Phil Spencer has conducted his final interview of 2020, talking to Xbox Live's Major Nelson in a recap of the year, and highlighting during the discussion that his team is constantly trying to build more Xbox Series X|S consoles.
Both Spencer and Major Nelson noted that fans have been struggling to get ahold of the devices since launch (particularly the Xbox Series X), and the Xbox boss explained that they're being made as fast as possible.
"I get some people [saying] 'why didn't you build more?', 'why didn't you start earlier?', 'why didn't you ship them earlier?', all of those things. And it's really just down to physics and engineering.
We're not holding them back, we're building them as fast as we can, we have all of the assembly lines going... it's something that we're constantly working on."
Spencer went on to point out that it's an issue that has been affecting the gaming industry in general ("the PlayStation 5 is in very tight supply"), but the teams involved are "incredibly dedicated" and he appreciates people's patience.

I still use my One X everyday and I am dying to get a Series X, but I know the wait will be worth it
More kiddie and cartoonish games by Microsoft on Series X, please.
The limited production is understandable and perhaps unavoidable. Bot purchases are a challenge for all retailers.
What bothered me wasn't having to wait. It was the Xbox Store showing me an expected shipping time of one week during checkout and then altering the shipping estimate to over a month the moment my order was done.
Hopefully, Microsoft has sorted that out by now. Delays are acceptable if they are well communicated.
In Phil we trust
Its not just the new consoles, it happened with the Switch and many fpga boards for retro console mods and the new graphics cards are pretty hard to come by as well
@Grot
Exactly!
@Anti-Matter
Why? You said in another article that the Series X is ugly, it’s not white so you can put your stickers on it, too expensive & you will never buy one.
@Kefka2589
Haha!!! Well played! 😂
I really wish we could just pre-order a console from the Microsoft website with a number.
When your number comes up, you get your console shipped to you.
One console per address. If your address has already been used for an order...that's it. (How many addresses could a scalper use?)
All orders require a strict captcha mechanic before even adding to cart (to prevent bots).
I mean it will suck to wait, but at least you know you will get one at some point.
@KelticDevil
I live in Indonesia and when i saw XBOX series X arrived in Indonesia, the price was around Rp 11,000,000 or more than $783 !
The price after with several taxes.
Gosh... That was very expensive consoles that i have ever seen.
Being in Aerospace production industry.
It would be interesting to know how many per hour come off the production line.
A product like this should be in the 100s per hour and being honest I don’t see that from either Microsoft or Sony, Not continuously anyway.
Once a production line is set up and running and flowing unless there is a good reason to stop the production line these next generation consoles should be flying of the line.
I’m sure there are issues somewhere, maybe component parts missing or even Covid playing a part or despatching and transport.
@Dezzy70 I don't think either company is used to this kind of demand. They've always been scare at launch but never this bad. Mix of gaming being a bigger market than ever, holiday covid FOMO (i said on ps, ps5 is the new toilet paper and yeast. People that don't even play games are grabbing them simply because they're scarce and hard to get so they have to buy one.), Plus certainly slower manufacturing.. Chinese factories aren't up to full speed as far as I've heard. And certainly western factories aren't where cpus are made.
@GamingFan4Lyf I second the"order and get a number" idea. But not the one per address. Some of us are legitimately buying for 2 or more gamers at home, and getting only one really ruins the whole point of buying them. It's not fair to tell people only the one person in you house can own this despite being two different people, only because you live at the same mailing address. Not least if which a product that actually offers specific features for people with multiple in the same home...
Though most retailers do offer one per customer anyway. But yeah if they do one per address next time, i might as well not bother buying the one, even.
@NEStalgia. True. The thought was simply to prevent scalpers from tearing the site up and artificially driving up the “number” for regular customers by just ordering a bunch.
But I guess the guarantee of having an order could take wind out their sails all together.
@NEStalgia
It’s definitely all a bit crazy. But yes I’m positive manufacturing is not up to scratch or full speed due to various reasons.
One positive though, people I know with new consoles seem to be having no quality issues at the minute, including myself. So that’s good news.
@Dezzy70 Yeah I'm surprised at the decent QC. Maybe they're doing more in qc, slowing production further, to avoid lots of cross shipping defects in the pandemic where nobody can handle it. Which is a net positive tradeoff imo.
The handful of early doa units seem to have been fewer than past launches despite more units sold, both for xsxs and ps5!
@GamingFan4Lyf yeah, it makes partial sense, and certainly limits of 5 Max would account for virtually all reall situations while still stopping scalpers (i remember the NES Mini Classic scalpers with an entire pallet in their living room...)
I think the organized high volume scalpers represent a bigger problem then the handful that buy and flip a few. Not fond of either but the organized guys are the bigger trouble with the bots and such.
But yeah, if people had a guaranteed number and an estimate of "ships by April 23" they'd be a lot less eager to pay double the money from scalpers."
@Grot It certainly didn't warrant an 'article'. It's not a poll though so... small mercies.
I’ll have the funds for a Series X in a couple of weeks time, what’s the best thing to do to try and get one? Keeping multiple tabs open on my phone of different sites like Amazon, Argos etc and keep refreshing the page all day everyday until I manage to get one? I refuse to buy one from a scalper.
@NEStalgia Instead of one per household, it should be one per person per household. John Smith at 123 Main Street can only order one. But Susan Smith at 123 Main Street can also order one. Also anyone should be able to order a second after the first is delivered.
Example:
On Day 0, place an order for one console.
On Day 10, console is delivered.
Also on Day 10, place another order for a second console.
@joeyflannel other then loading times and auto HDR ive seen very little difference between the two i have both...unless you have a tv thats able to do 120hz the upgrade wasnt really worth it. not yet at least.
@NEStalgia anyone who paid double from a scalper is a idiot, im sorrry with the XsX if you had a xbox one S or one X there was no need to go and pay 1k for the series X it isnt that huge of a difference yet,..so far all the games on it dont look much better then their One X counterparts....so to pay double instead of waiting was just a idiotic thing to do and made the scalpers do what they do more.
@NotoriousWhiz Yeah that makes a lot more sense. Still frustrating for me in that I'm the one with the accounts set up to buy everything...... . But still more workable.
