The bird and bear have been absent on Xbox systems for what feels like a lifetime now, with very little mention outside of 2008's Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. The pair made an appearance again in 2015 as part of Rare Replay, but only to serve as bundling the original Nintendo 64 games into its package.
One of the series' original creators Steve Mayles recently mentioned how their addition into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch "could well be the game that saved Banjo-Kazooie", while the franchise's original composer Grant Kirkhope also said he "doubt[s] we’ll ever see" a new game.
With the resurgence of platformers underway and classic platforming legends returning, such as Crash Bandicoot and Psychonauts 2, could Banjo-Kazooie return or did the series end with Nuts & Bolts?

All the moves Microsoft is making right now are consumer focused, so if Phil feels there's enough demand for it, then I could see a third "more traditional" Banjo at least being considered. There's also the conundrum of who'll develop it. Rare doesn't seem bothered and Double Fine is also out...
Also, Nuts & Bolts is my all-time favourite Xbox 360 game and I have no idea why people hate it so much.
Get Playtonic on it Phil 😆
As Banjo Kazooi was so much more focused and fun than Banjo Tooie, and that one was so much more focused and fun than Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts, I highly doubt it.
I hope so, Xbox would ge foolish not to..
This would be epic. I’m currently on my ‘Rare’ play through — going for 100% in Banjo, Tooie, Nuts and Bolts; following up with the Yooka Laylees. And I even got me a BK tattoo a few months ago.
To me, nuts and bolts is such an under-appreciated game. I think too many got hung up on seeing Banjo in a ‘not-Banjo’ game.
Tooie was a slighter weaker game but was still brilliant (9/10 for me, with Canary Mary along nearly making it 8/10!). It would be ace to see Banjo back with Rare in any shape or form (wait no... Conker and Project Spark was not fun!)
I think there's enough demand for Banjo-Kazooie to return that it's surely going to happen sooner or later, and, even with the upcoming Psychonauts 2, Xbox's catalogue of exclusives could benefit with another platformer.
My wild prediction is that Microsoft will hand development duties over to Sumo Digital (assuming Rare are put of the picture). They're a generally reliable outfit who usually do a decent job in handling existing IPs. Sony entrusted them with LittleBigPlanet 3 and Sackboy, and Sega with Sonic Racing, so why not Microsoft with Banjo?
Personally I think a complete remake like what we got with Spyro and Crash would be the best way forward, there are many people who have never played these before (me being one of them) might have a hard time with the dated visuals, I’ve heard nothing but good things about the game but after booting the first one up I found it quite hard to get into it purely on the visuals
@Dezzy70
You took the words right out of my mouth.
Why they haven’t already done this is beyond me. The developers are obviously made a similar game in Yooka-Laylee. It has ex Rare developers, so I have no idea what would be the hold up?
Heck they could just buy Playtonic & put them on the project.
@WesEds
I am playing Banjo-Kazooie as part of Rare Replay (so the 360 version) & I think the visuals hold up just fine.
@WesEds I like that idea. From the ground up remakes of Kazooie, Tooie and N&B would be lush.
Banjo-Kazooie: Bird & Bear Trilogy, anyone?
@KelticDevil it might just be me but I find that a lot of games from the N64 and PS1 are quite janky but a lot of them I really enjoyed but I couldn’t go back and play them now
@VenomousAlbino Banjo Triloogie I was thinking but bird and bear trilogy does sound better
I'm sure we'll get one someday but it seems crazy to me that there isn't one already out or ready to go. Seems like Microsoft have been missing a trick on this one for a while now
Much as I love the games I'm happy with the 5 Banjo games we have.
If there isn't a genuine reason or drive to make a new one then just leave it imo.
If Microsoft were gonna bring back another platformer would honestly prefer Blinx.
I want to...butI’m finding it hard to believe. Kirkhope did some Banjo remixes lately and they sound awesome. But if they were working on an actual sequal, they wouldn’t spill the beans would they? https://grantkirkhope.bandcamp.com/track/mad-monster-mansion-rides-again
@WesEds yes, a really good remake would be great too. And would show that people are interested before doing a full development on a completely new game.
@WesEds
I do agree that some games on the PS1 & N64 haven’t held up well in the visuals department. Seeing FFVII now is like 😳. Or games like Tomb Raider.
I think it was the new age of 3D and polygons, so it’s a bit rough.
But surprisingly, Banjo hasn’t bugged me much at all. The game still has serous camera & hit detection issues though. Overall, I am still loving the game.
If ever it were time for a "Banjo Threeie" it's now. We can hope, they have brought back Perfect Dark after a long absence recently, so why not Banjo and Kazooie...
A third proper iteration of the game is massively overdue and sorely needed!!
I definitely feel that there should be a good balance between family friendly games and games aimed at more mature audiences.
