You need to go all the way back to March for the first time we saw the internals of an Xbox Series X demo unit, courtesy of Digital Foundry and Austin Evans. Eight months on, we can now finally get a look at the internals of the actual final Xbox Series X retail design thanks to Brazilian YouTube channel Detonando Gueek.
The timestamped video above showcases a look at the tightly packed components inside the system, as well as another up-close peek at the giant fan and its hidden Master Chief sticker. Here's a zoomed in screenshot:

There's nothing unexpected here compared to the rundown we saw back in March, but we're still mightily impressed by how Microsoft has managed to fit everything in, with that huge fan set to provide plenty of necessary cooling power.
Ready to put it to the test? Give us your thoughts on the internals of the Xbox Series X below.

As said there's no real surprises given we've seen much more with Digital Foundry earlier in the year but its an incredibly well engineered piece of kit, with a very small footprint and indeed price for the technology that we're getting.
Its been said many times that Phil Spencer has done an amazing job in turning Xbox around and its refreshing how transparent they've been from day one about next gen and their objectives. Even more so when you consider the "we believe in generations" to the near immediate backtracking to supporting current gen until 2022 of its main competitor.
From the clear messaging, to the consumer led approach and services such as Gamepass they've really won me over for next gen
Looks neat (so much more than my pc for sure!). Can't comment on how well designed it is as I'm not a hardware designer - but as long as it doesn't break during my time with it I'll say its design is the bees knees
With no knowledge of hardware, you'd think that looks a right mess, but it's actually pretty amazing how they've engineered it.
To think, this is the most powerful next-gen console, yet it's got the smallest foot-print and lower thermals than its rival.
Congrats to MS.
Still worried about massive amounts of dust getting into that wopping fan on the top. Hopefully it will be user friendly in terms of cleaning etc
Oh Fraser, please say you can keep giving us more Information now on the console since you have one!
Impressive bit of engineering for sure! Quite a brave soul as well, any of you guys plan on taking yours apart in the first week lol?
@Rockboy247 My lips are sealed for just a little bit longer! But feel free to ask me questions when the time comes
She's a beast captain..
@redd214 How else would you get to the ice-cold beverages if you don't open it up?
@Daaan14 I'm not worried about dust getting into the fan. It will pick up less dust than traditional consoles - low RPM fan with large vent, less dust sucked through (and dust has less impact on its performance), high RPM fan (PS4, 360, etc), lots of dust and dust is rapidly degrading of performance.
But...what I'm worried about more, since my consoles sit in the open rather than covered in a shelf, is larger, solid objects dropping into it. Bugs(nax), random stray objects if passing near the console etc. Large open vents pointing upward in an area I might end up over it, or random other objects will (rolling off a table, onto the console, since it sits UNDER a shelf) etc make me think I might want to orient it horizontally for the first time ever. I'll have to see how it "feels" once I get it.
If horizontal is good enough for Phil, it's good enough for me....
@FraserG guess I will have to play the waiting game!
@NEStalgia surely a vent facing up is going to start collecting all kinds of stuff. Feel like I will need to check on it more than usual and hope it won’t heat it up if I leave it. Just speculation, obviously.
@Daaan14 Yeah....I never run horizontal...but it seems kind of sensible with this design in a lot of ways. I don't think it'll heat up in terms of the fan not performing. Not at that size fan. But if enough junk gets into the system it could start insulating components too much. Or worse, if it's something conductive that finds its way in....
I don't think it's a worry for anyone that has it on a shelf where something is over it, or out of the way atop a TV stand or anything....but since mine are in a traffic area with other nearby objects located above it...I need to install a screen above it or something if I don't do horizontal
@AJDarkstar Ooof on the CC thing. Same thing happened to me with my PS4 preorder back 7 years ago. Except instead of blocked by fraud protection, the card was closed out because....ironically.....Sony's breach the prior year compromised it, with visible signs between the preorder time and launch
Yeah, I really wish it had filters. Server PCs have filters. Even a lot of enthusiast chassis have filters (though we won't talk about the horrible orange Thermaltake 80mm fans I had 8 of in one case that you had to pull the filters by removing the fans............)
To be fair, I imagine the intake do have filters, or a small enough grille that it acts as a filter. The problem here isn't really a filter so much as an upward-facing exhaust vent where stray objects, more than dust, can drop into the large holes from above. All we need is for some tiny piece of metal or a twist tie to drop into those holes!
Nicely built I have to say, I’m interested to see how they have joined the two motherboards together though, see if it’s a potential weak point or not. Should find out next week.
Wondering if i will be able to open it up and rotate the power button 90 degrees so it looks correct when i have my series x horizontal. Otherwise my OCD might overload 😮
I'll be honest I thought the box would have lots more air space in it. I'm impressed it's jam packed. Good job xbox. Design like that costs more than $ 500.
