Last week, we reported here at Pure Xbox that multiple owners of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War were noticing that the game was crashing their Xbox Series X - and in extreme circumstances, completely killing it.
Since then, we've noticed many more reports of this issue flooding in from across the web, including for other consoles such as the Xbox One X, and unfortunately more instances of dead consoles have been coming in as well.
At the time last week, a Treyarch dev responded on Reddit with the following statement:
"Generally speaking, we're investigating all crashes and across the game. We outline to contact our Player Support so that you can share details with them and they collate the feedback. My immediate recommendations are to make sure that you're using the correct version for your platform. Players have also shared that disabling Ray Tracing on XSX has helped. LMK if it does."
This issue is becoming hard to avoid for Treyarch, Activision and Microsoft, so we're assuming we'll get some kind of official reply about it in the near future. For now though, we want to know if you're suffering this issue. Has Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War crashed your Xbox, or even worse, completely killed it? Let us know below.

Yup several crashes on day 1 and then nothing untill the first patch where it crashed numerous times in the campaign. And multiplayer and the to top it off I went to go continue my campaign yesterday and my save had literally vanished.. And I was near the end playing on realism... So had to start it all over
Game has been a total mess and ironicly its the most I've ever paid for a game at £65 but I thought I'd bite the bullet because I wanted something to somewhat test next gen lol... And it looks no better than modern warfare on the base xbox one and it performance is obviously abysmal
I have a Xbox Series S and it is running smooth. Most likely because there is no ray tracing option I guess.
I don't have CoD:CW, but I've had several games crashing my XSX. FH4 did it once. Just last night I bought Borderlands 3 on the black friday sale and had some weird moments where the controller would freeze for up to 2 minutes before becoming responsive again, and then when I went in to fight Shiv, the screen went black, but sound effects of thumps and bangs still played, then the system shut down.
It definitely seems to be a system level "BSOD" than specfific games I think.
It's not XB limited, PS5 keeps crashing to shut down with Miles periodically as well.
I get dashboarded every single time I try to play Cod on my Series X. I have tried turning off Ray tracing, clearing the cache, game chat instead of party, etc. I'm tired of spending so much money on these games for them to not work!
It probably can't process the title.
The game crashed alot for me while playing multiplayer..
Nice for those lucky enough to have a new console
@MarzoriuM i turned ray tracing off and havent had a crash since, but before that i crashed literally every other game at the least
I've had a few crashes, but mainly on older games, not sure if there are some backward compact bugs, but given I have put in a 100 hours + on the console this feels pretty reliable compared to my PS4 Pro or PC.
4% of users with bricked Xboxes? Is this really a true number, I'd expect anything over 1% to make the news.
The game worked fine for me until the patch a couple of weeks ago. The game will freeze in Multiplayer and a few seconds later the console will power off immediately, oddly my controller is still on. I've noticed it tends to happen more on certain maps with Garrison, Cartel and Nuketown being the worst. I actually cannot play on Garrison at all without my console crashing! I have a friend who is experiencing the same issues too.
...don’t know why I thought there wouldn’t be problems spending that much money on a new console and “new” Call of Duty. Then to be told to “turn off” features of Series X for it to be playable? Are you for real? That is completely absurd. I spend most of time turning the console back on, starting up the game, only for it to crash mid-match, or during zombies — so as far as I’m concerned, the game is unplayable. Such a joke! Seriously, fix your *****. Do your testing. There is no way you (Activision) didn’t’ know about these crashes, but still wanted to push this trash out to the public for the holiday. “Get it out, fix it later” seems to be a common theme these days. At least CD Project Red had the balls to delay their game and to do some QA (still TBD). Maybe they knew ***** wasn’t right and held back? I always had my view of CoD as ‘rushed’, ‘cut-paste’, game, but wanted to believe that wasn’t true this time around — guess I should’ve known better. Waste not to wait until it was $20 or borrow it from someone.
On series X my game has been crashing consistently since the patch on Nov 25. Every other game works fine. It’s literally only Cold War that had the issue. I have stopped playing entirely because it is causing my entire system to crash. At first turning off ray tracing worked. Eventually, it started crashing even with ray tracing off. Activision needs to acknowledge this issue and give folks a timeline. It is an extremely widespread issue on the Series X.
This is by far the most absurd mental and pathetic excuse of a video game I have ever seen in my life. Imagine you payed more for a new console, paid more for a new version of a game only for it to not allow you to play longer then 2 minutes at a time. The game freezes and shuts down my series X no matter what I’m playing and what setting I try to change. After the last few call of duty’s you would think that devs would understand they are on thin ice but the mantra of selling and pushing out games and fixing later has seem to be a key point call of duty titles for years. I told myself I wouldn’t ever buy another cod ever again and I feel as I should have listened to my gut on this one. I’m hearing complaints that 4% of series Xs have been bricks due to a game and that’s the most pathetic crap that a game could achieve leave it to call of duty to hit that milestone. Rather then communicating with players about issues and timelines they choose to release a bug fix that makes no difference if you can’t even play the game. They know most ppl only play zombies and choose to fix bugs in that but what about the guys that can’t even load it up without crashing I guess we’ll just have to keep that in mind next time trey arch decides to shove more garbage out in the market.
This may not work for you but it has somewhat worked for me for the past day and a half. What I did was completely UNINSTALL the Ray Tracing pack in the game files. Since doing this I haven’t had any crashing, knocking on wood that it continues this way. Lemme know if this has helped anyone else, I’m curious.
@Melt24 my game was running smooth until the last update too. Now, it lags/ gets really choppy when I enter a firefight, it’s barely able to make it through a game without freezing and automatically shutting my Xbox off. It freezes during the campaign and always kicks me out to the dash when I try to play the Havana level. It’s completely broken and there needs to be a lawsuit and refund at this point.
Crashes all the time, running super slow in multiplayer which is not my internet because every other game runs smoothly. This game has serious issues and with all the cash made from all the games you would think they can get something right.
Crashes and freezes constantly. What a sad pathetic start for a franchise that is barely hanging in there. Throw in the 69 bucks I paid for it and I see a class action law suit on the horizon. COUNT ME IN!!!!!!
The real concern is that there has been no acknowledgement from Treyarch or Microsoft. People are very much entitled to request a refund
This game is severely broken
