Dev Hints Why Xbox Series X Is Getting More 120FPS Games Than PS5

We've seen some interesting developments over the past week relating to 120FPS support on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, with Xbox One games such as Star Wars: Squadrons and Rocket League announcing that 120FPS options will be coming to those titles for the new Xbox consoles in the near future.

Interestingly though, the same can't be said of the PS5 for either of those games.

Now, we might have an explanation as to why. In a statement to our sister site Push Square, Rocket League developer Psyonix highlighted that because of how backwards compatibility is implemented on the two sets of systems, Xbox actually makes it a lot easier to patch in 120FPS support for older titles.

"Right now we have nothing further to share on additional PS5 plans, but can shed some more light on the why. Our team’s main focus this year was our recent free to play transition, and updating major features like our Tournaments system. Due to this we had to make tough decisions on what else we could achieve. Enabling 120hz on Xbox Series X|S is a minor patch, but enabling it on PS5 requires a full native port due to how backwards compatibility is implemented on the console, and unfortunately wasn’t possible due to our focus elsewhere."

Backing this up, Eurogamer has also discovered that Call of Duty: Warzone has quietly added 120FPS support on Xbox Series X recently, but the same hasn't been applied to the PlayStation 5.

Obviously Psyonix doesn't speak for EA and Activision, so there might be other reasons why these titles aren't getting 120FPS modes for PS5 as well, but from an Xbox perspective it's certainly pleasing to see Microsoft making it easy for developers to go back and add this option for older games.
