If you've been keeping tabs on the pre-order situation for the PlayStation 5, you've probably heard how badly it's gone.
Sony said pre-orders would open on 17th September, but some retailers began listing the system early (with no notice) and it reportedly sold out within minutes. Our colleagues over at Push Square described the whole situation as a "mess".
If it's got you wondering how pre-orders will play out for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, there's no need to worry. Although Microsoft has already warned fans that stock will be limited, earlier today (after all the chaos with the PS5), it put out a tweet containing a rather timely message:
"Don’t worry - we’ll let you know the exact time pre-orders start for you soon"
Of course, we already know the start time in the UK - Microsoft has confirmed that pre-orders will go live at 8AM on Tuesday, September 22nd, and it looks like many other regions will follow suit with an 8AM start as well.
It's good to know that Xbox will be providing clarification for all countries soon though, so no-one should be caught by surprise. This should also prevent any confusion amongst retailers. No need to panic!
Do you plan on securing an Xbox Series X or Series S when pre-orders go live on 22nd September? Tell us down below.

It was a bit of a disgrace how the PS5 Preorders went, I was luckily enough to be able to get one but Microsoft have handled this a lot better
It doesn't matter. After seeing how fast ps5 pre-orders sold out, mere seconds in some places, you can count on Series S and X to sell out near instantly especially everyone knowing exact times they go live.
Lol! I’d hold your tongue until MS preorders go live. Hopefully they’ll try and contain it but Sony tried and failed. Whose to stop Game opening up preorders early for Xbox like they did for Sony? Whatever happens it’ll be a riot and people who don’t get one will complain while people who do will say it’s all fine. Nature of the beast.
Think @TheNewButler needs a chill pill. Who cares if the console is expensive to build if it’s the same price of an Xbox To buy. Surely you should be happy about it?
Thought yesterday’s game showings looked great and the pricing is great too. Same for Xbox. Nothing better than 2 gaming giants going head to head and us reaping the rewards. Why stress about it?
I managed to pre-order a PS5 last night, but this dog had me dying.
@TheNewButler games are always this crazy price when a new console launches. Probably showing my age but I remember paying £60 for Mario collection on the SNES. I bought God of war on PS4 after few months of release at £20. Don’t get too worried. If you think Sony are screwing your over just wait a month after release to purchase a game and screw them back.
@Carck it’s very doom and gloom on here. Sony will not go bust because they sell their console at this price. They make so much money with the PlayStation brand it’s insane.
I reiterate my initial response. Relax and enjoy this next generation and ignore the MS fanboys that say Sony are a mess and the Sony fan boys that say MS have no decent games. They are trying to bring you down and sounds like it’s working 🤣
@TheNewButler street fighter 2! My mate got it imported from Japan with the converter and cost him £100 together. I just remember it being Classed as ‘arcade perfect’ so worth every penny.
I think gamers don’t realise how easy they have it now. Buying the quality of games that exist for quarter the price we did. We also didn’t necessarily get games on release but always had to pay £50-60 anyway. And certainly not this level of quantity either.
As I’ve got such a big backlog I want to work through I’ve decided to hold out a few months before going next gen. I hope by the time I buy stock will be plentiful!
@TheNewButler hah I remember streetfighter II at £65 but luckily I got it bundled with a snes for Xmas.
Totally agree about Sackboy, I’m so hyped for that and thought I was the only one!!
@StonyKL
It’s not “gloom and doom” in here. This is an Xbox website, not a PlayStation website. And Microsoft didn’t put out a bunch of embarrassing news after wasting everyone’s time with a 40 minute “showcase”.
Us Xbox fans are doing just fine. 👍🏻
Do we have a list of the 36 countries that are included in the world wide release?
@KelticDevil sorry dude. I take this as a gaming website and probably my mistake. Comments here do seem very extreme. I didn’t find the details yesterday embarrassing, more exciting and usually it’s the Mrs saying me watching gameplay is a waste of time. Would have assumed that hobby would be acceptable here.
Anyway on a separate note, sort of, Sony are getting stick for not locking in the preorder time and forcing all companies to stick to it. I’m wondering if this would give us ‘hardcore’ gamers more of a chance to buy it as we’re the only ones who knew it was all happening.
My concern is when 22nd sept comes along and I’m sitting at my pc so will everyone else, including casual gamers and parents buying little Johnny his Xbox. I actually wish they’d announce here then offer preorders an hour later so I get a heads up before everyone.
I’m not a bad person I just really want to get one while lockdown the sequel happens. Winter is coming.
Interestingly when I was in my local GAME they tried getting me to pre order the Xbox Series X or PS5 last week
@StonyKL I'm worried about the 22nd as well. It's going to be a bloodbath. But it's still going to be better than what Sony/Walmart unleashed. The problem yesterday was that, it wasn't even the "hardcore" that knew about it. It was the people and bots scouring twitter and refreshing pages ever 4 seconds, largely with bots and alerts. A.K.A. the scalpers plus some of the hardcore. The hardcore weren't watching at all, because Sony told us it would be today...which we knew they told us that, because we're the hardcore that watches these things. Worse, each retailer went up to be knocked down like dominos. One would go up, the internet would swarm to it, deplete it, then the next would go up, and repeat. So you had everyone competing at once for a single retailer selling the product. At least with a schedule, the swarm will be split. And I'm not sure too many FIFA casuals and parents buying Little Johnny an XBox are going to be stalking preorder pages in September to be DAY ONE EDITION owners.
I still don't think it's going to be pleasant though, and I fear the odds of scoring one will be quite low. Lower even than with PS5 because now everyone that didn't get a PS5 and is ticked about the handling of it will be also aiming for XSeX. But we also don't know what number of the 10m PS5s were actually included in preorders (was it 5%, 10%, 60% of the 10m 2020 production units?) And we don't know how many consoles MS is producing of each model and how many of those they're opening to preorders.
I also can't imagine how XAA is going to work to sign up for credit approval while racing to secure preorders....doesn't seem like a great combination to be doing.
@WesEds I'm wondering what price they were going to charge you to preorder a price-unannounced PS5
@NEStalgia yep the XAA is my concern as well. Only way I’m getting a series X is through that programme and as I’ve said before, I really want to have one while the lockdown over winter happens.
@StonyKL Yeah, I intend to try that, as well but I can't imagine it going well at all, honestly. It takes time to sign up....and that's time we clearly don't have with these preorder circuses. I also don't know what happens if you do the approval, take the ding to your score for trying to open credit, but then they're sold out and you have to back out - you've dinged your score for nothing. Unless they're willing to take unlimited preorders with XAA and ship them out even into 2021, I don't see how they can do that with the way preorders work. I'm hoping after Sony's meltdown they'll evaluate that between now and Tuesday and think about it (or just not open XAA yet during the circus after all?)
@StonyKL I’m not 100% how that’s going to go but I would think if you do it through the Microsoft website, you might get signed up but just might not get one shipped to you right away. I’m thinking they would create a waiting list or just tell you you’ll get one a week or two after launch.
Just a guess though. There’s no “limit” from Microsoft themselves theoretically. Just time to get ahold of one of the first round is claimed.
@xMightyMatt14x That's how it worked for Xbox One X. All pre-orders were accepted but the longer you waited the longer you had to wait for your console to be shipped. They also get stock earlier than other retailers, obviously. If people can't place their orders they can always buy it at the Microsoft Store. If the first stock sells out the pre-orders remain and they will be shipped when the next stocks arrives.
@BlueOcean good to know! If I end up waiting a few weeks or so (get a late preorder) I’ll be fine. I’ll just be excited to get one.
@xMightyMatt14x No problem 😊.
