CD Projekt Red has revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 will have a "slightly shorter" main story than The Witcher 3, as the team received "a lot of complaints" about that game's 50+ hour campaign being too long.
This was highlighted by senior quest designer Patrick K. Mills on the recent Night City Wire stream (thanks ResetEra), in which he explained that the team wanted players to see the whole story this time around:
"We got a lot of complaints about The Witcher 3's main story just being too long. And looking at the metrics, you see tremendous amounts of people played through that game really far, but never made it to the end."
In regards to how long the game will take for completionists, Mills admitted he can't put a number on it right now, but enthused that although the main story is shorter, there's still "lots to do."
You can check out the latest episode of Cyberpunk 2077's Night City Wire on YouTube, and the game is available to pre-order now on the Microsoft Store ahead of its release for Xbox One on November 19th.

I'll believe that the game is big enough.
People have been blowing this way out of proportion since it came out. They said slightly shorter, so it'll be like 40-45 hours? That's plenty long enough, especially when you take into account that you're meant to play it multiple times and there's who knows how many side missions to do. Plus there's DLC coming.
Works for me. This game also sounds like Deus Ex on steroids, which also works for me. Actually it would be fun if they threw in an easter egg. JC Denton or Adam Jensen standing in the shady corner of a night club.
@TheGamerKing Nope. Max 40 hours. - ADHD Gamer.
Sidenote: The last RPG game I finished (prior to FF7R which I was able to finish quickly due to timing) was Octopath Traveler, and that took me about a year. I finished half of it when it released, and then picked it back up 6 months later and finished the other half. (Didn't beat the true final boss though, after trying once, and the battle basically didn't progress after 2 hours, I nope'd out of there).
I'm currently playing the Witcher 3 and im really enjoying it..
Let's remember there are always three figures we have to consider about a game's length: how long devs say it'll take you, how long How Long to Beat says it'll take you and how long it'll take average gamers.
If a dev says their game will take you 40 hours, then HLTB will show you a 25-30 hour average, but it might take you over 50, considering how many times you'll die, how long you'll waste looking for where to go next, etc.
The number they give you doesn't really mean that much...
The shorter the game, the more likely I am to actually beat it. So I’m cool with this!
Yeah, this doesn't worry me. The main story might be a bit shorter to make gamers with less time on their hands happy, but I'm sure there'll still be tons of side quests and other optional stuff for the players like me who go looking for stuff to do. Hell, I spent 100+ hours each in Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim and I never did beat the main story in any of them.
