The hype train is in full effect for July's highly-anticipated Xbox Series X event later this month, and now according to a report from Video Games Chronicle, we have a new possible date for the event, as well as a suggestion that new Xbox studio The Initiative will debut its first game during the show.
Let's start with The Initiative. The is the studio that was formed in 2018 by veterans of the industry, and has been rumoured to be working on a new Perfect Dark. Whether that's true remains to be seen, but either way, VGC says it sources have told them The Initiative will reveal its first game later this month.
As for the date, it was reported recently that Microsoft was targeting the week of July 20th for the event, and VGC's sources are now saying the show is currently planned for Thursday, July 23. This corresponds with a date shared by VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb recently as well.
We're trying not to get too excited for July's Xbox Series X event, but it's getting difficult with these increasing reports! We can't wait to see what The Initiative has up its sleeve, and it seemingly won't be long now until we find out.
Are you hoping for a new Perfect Dark from The Initiative, or something else? Let us know in the comments.

I'm in the great position here where if it's Perfect Dark I'd be overly chuffed. If it's a new IP I'd be overly chuffed, if it's Banjo I'd be overly chuffed. Essentially so long as it's anything other than an online multiplayer service game I'll be chuffed. Can't wait to see what it is.
YES GIMME GAMES GIMME GAMES
Hater fangirls will need a new fake narrative after July that’s for sure...one by one Xbox nailing them down!🔥
I just think a Perfect Dark reboot done in that newer Tomb Raider type of style except have it be about stealth, gadgets, & sci-fi.
A day after the Mixer shutdown, suspicious indeed if true. I'd guess either Microsoft's trying to bury the controversy by distracting people with the Series X event or they'll promote the new partnership further by announcing Oculus support for Series X.
I don't know how big of a studio The Initiative is, I have read nothing but good things about it, but I wonder how big it is in terms of how many people they have working there. I say that because I wonder if they could possibly be working on the Perfect Dark reboot and a new IP as well. Probably not but one can hope I guess. Whatever the case may be, the excitement only grows and grows as the days go by.
Can't wait to see what they've been working on. 😀😀
@Grumblevolcano
I doubt this has anything to do with Mixer. Not many actually used or cared about Mixer, hence why it failed in the first place.
And other publishers events have been on a Thursday. Microsoft is probably just following suit.
@MAC26
I don’t think they are currently big enough to develop two “AAAA” games at this time.
Plus, let’s see if they make one good one first. 😉
Why not just make a new IP?
I'd rather Xbox be brave and just make some new things. It would suck being able to predict their games for the foreseeable future gears 6, halo infinite 2, forza 27, fable 4 and perfect dark 3
@MAC26 That's exactly what I think they're doing. Last time Phil talked about them he said something like "Peole in the studio (The Initiative) are challenging themselves to do new things (and old things) in new ways". So I assumed one was a new IP and the other a remake from a old franchise. Let's see.
@duhsoares21 I did read some of that interview now that you mention it. It would be amazing if that were the case as long as they take their time with both to make sure they come out right.
@KelticDevil Mixer shutting down isn't the problem, the partnership with Facebook is the problem.
@Grumblevolcano
How is it a problem? If you don’t like Facebook Gaming, then don’t go on there. And they already said they aren’t sharing any personal info.
And also.....it’s not on topic of this article anyways.
@MedaXbot technically perfect dark and fable are a new ip the problem is they were forgotten never used more than a decade so they are more of a reboot than a sequel the new fable won't be called 4 or perfect dark won't be called 3 few people know those franchise so they are starting from scratch the thing that sony did always better than xbox is that they never forgot about their old ip even if it is kinda stupid or barely sales anything example little big planet when MS bought those studio many years ago they released like 1 game and then never used them
@MedaXbot
Kinda like God of War 14, Gran Turismo 48, Ratchet & Clank 278, Uncharted 5, Spider-Man 187, etc.? 😂
"We're trying not to get too excited for July's Xbox Series X event, but it's getting difficult with these increasing reports!"
Exactly! 😁
And yes, Fable, Banjo-Kazooie and Perfect Dark need to come back. How could someone consider that reiterative? Last time we got new games was on Xbox 360.
@BlueOcean
I know, right?!!
The last real Perfect Dark game was a 360 launch title. And the last Banjo-Kazooie game was on the 360 too, like you said.
Microsoft needs to utilize these great IPs that Rare brought to the company. And if The Initiative is working on Perfect Dark...... 👍🏻
@KelticDevil haha maybe but that's not the only games they make
@Grumblevolcano Facebook gaming won’t be integrated in xbox platform like mixer is...confirmed by microsoft. They are just giving option to migrate existing users.
@Grumblevolcano I don't know why some people are adding noise to the Facebook-Microsoft thing. Facebook won't be added to Xbox but Microsoft recommended using Twitch instead and they're just migrating streamers to Facebook Gaming because the Mixer shutdown was planned months ago. They even cancelled Xbox ads on Facebook and Instagram because of Facebook's recent "freedom of speech" controversy.
If Microsoft cooperates with Facebook regarding Oculus that's something that we don't know and it will also depend on the new Facebook policies because no one wants bad press.
@KelticDevil Exactly, just two Perfect Dark games, just three main Banjo-Kazooie games and just three Fable games since they were created. How many Marios have been released? Aren't the New Super Mario Bros. games reiterative? Isn't the PS5 Spiderman a semi-sequel to the PS4 game? 🤔
@MedaXbot
True. But the games you mentioned aren’t the only games Microsoft makes. 😉
@BlueOcean Are you talking about Spiderman DLC which is one of the very few ps5 games available at launch? Meanwhile Xbox Series X confirmed to launch with 1000+ enhanced titles day 1.
@Z3u5000 Yes that and Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart which looks a lot like the PS4 game.
Would you rather have a new game or a new game with new elements from a known series?
