Last week, Video Games Chronicle's sources had mentioned that new Xbox studio The Initiative would unveil its first game during July's Xbox Games Showcase event. However, according to industry insider Jeff Grubb of VentureBeat, that won't be the case. It's all getting a bit confusing now!
In his report, Grubb pointed out that the game reveal had been rumoured, but stated "that’s not the case," and that "Microsoft is holding it back." He suggested it's likely not ready due to how new the studio still is, and if it's working on a next-gen blockbuster (rumoured to be Perfect Dark), it could be a few years yet before it's ready to ship.
Industry insider Shinobi602 was also asked about this on Resetera earlier today, revealing that they're aware of what the company is working on but can't say whether it'll be there. However, they say the show is still "stacked" either way.

Hmmmm... I hope Microsoft know what they're doing here... The last event of theirs was definitely underwhelming. It won't matter if Obsidian have something great to replace it with, however just relying on Halo, Forza and Fable seems like an accident waiting to happen for me
@pip_muzz right because this one game is a make or break when no knows what it is yet. And heaven forbid they hold something back so Sony can’t catch them completely off guard. Not to mention Covid and working at home is still a thing, and I’d rather see games more likely to come out this year and next as opposed to late 2021 or 2022 game’s. As for “relying on Fable”. What !?! That game may not even be a thing. o.O I’d hardly apply “rely on” to it.
It's a shame we won't finally get to hear what it is of course but it just means we have something further to be excited for after the showcase 😁
No surprise here. I don’t want them to pull a Sony or Nintendo & announce a game only for it not to come out until 2023.
This a brand new studio, so I’m sure they just need more time.
@mousieone I get what you're saying. Its just that lately there's more news about what's not going to be in the presentation than there is.
It was originally going to be a first party showcase, however now it's confirmed to have a fair few third party titles as well. This needs to be the clincher for people to choose Series X over the PS5. Of course they shouldn't tell every single game now, but Halo Infinite needs to be great after the last ones, we know about Everwild etc.... It would be nice to have a few surprises. Let's wait and see. Hopefully it won't be shown because they have so many other games to showcase instead. I was just getting overly excited about a potential Perfect Dark revival... My bad.
I have mixed feelings about this..🤷♂️🤷♂️
I'd rather have one show to blow my mind. Holding things back seems silly the point of a show is to excite people. Would you rather have one amazing show or two decent ones?
Hi everyone, give Xbox a chance.
If they show an amazing top end Halo and Forza 8 and both are ready for release date of the series x, then that is more than Sony have done so far for the release of PS5 from their AAA in house studios, So far they have a Spider-Man a sort of spin off for release day.
As for Fable and Hellblade 2 I’m sure they might be shown gameplay wise but I doubt they will be ready for release date.
Remember also Autumn and the lead up to Christmas is packed with big 3rd party games as well.
At least Xbox studios have not vanished off the face of the earth like Nintendo’s in house AAA studios, they are more quiet than a library.
It's a balance, you never wish to show your whole hand but don't want the consumer to be underwhelmed.... It's obvious they need to show a great response but still keep the odd card back for further responses from Sony....
Say they show us everything, everyone's happy but then Sony respond with a couple of big game announcements, Microsoft then have nothing in reserve...
They don't want to be caught out, but also not show up short, it's a balance....
Don't want another Scalebound situation.
@Dezzy70
I completely agree with everything you said.
@JON22
This has nothing to do with Scalebound or anything like that situation. 😂🙄
@zane547
I agree. Crackdown 3 was a mess because it was revealed way too early & they didn’t deliver on the promises of the game.
And I also don’t want just some title screen like Nintendo showed off with Metroid Prime.
Or what Sony did years ago at their ridiculously overrated E3 with their FFVII remake, Shenmue 3, and SoTC remake thing where the games took 3-4 yrs to come out.
@pip_muzz yeah no worries. I get the hype. Honestly I’m one of those that know they want the series X, so for me this is more games that I hope are in the first year launch window. I also don’t so much care whether they out show Sony or not, I just care about what I personally can look forward to
@KelticDevil those super early a oh center’s still can be good to motivate the fan base, specially if they are honest.
My worry with extremely early announcements is more about MS falling back to its old habits of canceling hyped up games after years in the spotlight (a fear I never tend to have with either Sony or Nintendo.)
@zane547 On your point if this not being a third party studio l game... Fable Legends?
On the topic of Crackdown 3.... this studio already has been sooooo overhyped that should they deliver anything lesser to a TLOU2 killer; it will be worse than a Crackdown 3 situation.
@zane547 I’m somewhat confident Spencer will avoid cancellations at all cost, but I also feel they have over-hyped whatever they are doing. After so much buildup, it would be bad if this turns out to be XBox’s The Order 1886.
@Tharsman Microsoft hasn't over-hyped The Initiative, they generally talk about Xbox Game Studios, in general. It's the internet what overhypes The Initiative because everybody knows that it's made of important people. It's likely that their big game (if there's more than one) is a Series X exclusive and not a cross-gen game like Halo Infinite and that they can't show it so early.
Platinum's Scalebound is not a very good example although many people like using it, because that game was in development hell for years. Everybody loves blaming Microsoft for this but, reflecting on the game's cancellation in May 2019, Platinum studio head Atsushi Inaba said it “wasn’t easy” to see publisher Microsoft receive criticism for the decision as he felt “both sides failed,” and that ultimately, the game “didn’t do all of the things that we needed to do as a developer".
