Update: This has now been confirmed by Devolver Digital. Hooray!
Original story: If you love ninja-themed video games - especially of the old-school variety - then you absolutely must check out the "excellent" action-platformer The Messenger by Sabotage Studio.
According to a listing on the Microsoft Store, publisher Devolver Digital will be releasing this indie hit - inspired by classics such as Ninja Gaiden and Shinobi - on the Xbox One next week, on 25th June.
Here's the official store description:
As a demon army besieges his village, a young ninja ventures through a cursed world, to deliver a scroll paramount to his clan’s survival. What begins as a classic action platformer soon unravels into an expansive time-traveling adventure full of thrills, surprises, and humor.
One of the most unique aspects of this game is how it jumps between 8-bit and 16-bit sprites, animations, and backgrounds. Take a look in the trailer below:
There's also free DLC for this title called Picnic Panic, but there's no mention of this (just yet) on the Microsoft Store listing. Will you be checking this game out when it shows up on Xbox One next week? Tell us down below.

Everybody needs to play this game, it is truly amazing.
This game is simply brilliant. I have it on PS4 and highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't played it. It combines fabulously tight 2D action gaming with a wicked sense of humour.
Excellent game, loved it at launch on Switch. I highly recommend it for anyone who hasn't played it yet.
About time!!! I've been waiting this, now all I need is the release of Cyber Shadow as well. Maybe the greatest Ninja Gaiden metroidvania like game ever.
Very excited for this one. Just got the Hyperkin Duke as well, looking forward to beating this with it.
I was confused because I thought it had already released, but it was the Windows Store version that released.
Like previously stated, this game is a gem. Never finished on Switch. Definitely worth a shot again if it comes to Game Pass
Well, I'll have to be pretty straightforward here: if you're into Metroidvanias and/or 2d platformers, just play this game. It's a labor of love. Level design, music, writing, graphics (both 8 and 16 bit), abilities, weapons, everything is well done and there's a charm in the air.
I dedicated around 20 hours to get 100% and I'll do it again soon. If you're not a completionist, you can finish it in half of that time or a little more, but it's not the game that will make you want to finish fast.
Well, it's easy to notice I'm in love with the Messenger and there are a bunch of reasons to justify that. One of the best games released last decade. One of the best ninja games ever. One of the best Metroidvanias ever.
All right, all right. I'll shut up. But buy it
