I just finished Gears 5 and this is easily one of the best games in the series and definitely much better than Gears 4. The gameplay has been vastly improved and the game isn't strictly a cover/corridor shooter anymore. It has open worlds to explore and the environments are just stunning to look at. There's also a major incentive in exploring areas since they contain components and ultimate upgrades for your robot friend Jack. Which is a new gameplay mechanic for the series; you can now utilise different abilities with Jack and upgrade them with the components that you find. Some abilities are for example being able to cloak yourself, hijacking an enemy and let them fight alongside you for a brief amount of time, and also putting up a shield which reflects bullets. This changes the gameplay up drastically as you now have the option to play stealthily with the cloak or go guns blazing with the bullet shield. So while the game is fundamentally still a cover shooter, it has way more options this time around, which makes for varying and more fun firefights.

The story was also more interesting and compelling to follow compared to the previous game. Although since two of the four acts consist of open world sections, there will come moments where you forget what your objectives are in that region since you spend so much time exploring. The good thing is though that the open world areas don't overstay their welcome and can be explored in just a couple of hours before you move on to the next major story section. Furthermore, I thought the story was in general more memorable this time around because of strong plot events as well as the amount of recognisable characters. You of course have the new Delta team from Gears 4 along with a new character and there are also several returning characters from previous games. These characters give you a reason to care about the story, which should appeal to both veteran and new players of the franchise. Moreover, the new characters have some deep character developments and towards the end of the game, you start to realise how much they've grown on you.

A nitpick I have with the game is the inconsistent difficulty. Most of the time you're fine, but once you encounter bosses, mini-bosses or just enemies with heavy weapons, you are able to die in just one hit. One boss fight in particular at the end of act 2 was incredibly frustrating for me as it kept killing me in one hit over and over again, on top of it being very long-winded. I guess that's part of the structure of the game, that you need to play it safe but some fights do stand out compared to the rest of the game.

Overall I thought this game was phenomenal and definitely showcases the potential of future Xbox Game Studios titles. It has a strong narrative, solid gameplay, expansive open worlds to explore and deep customisation. It's definitely up there among the best Xbox first-party games I've played. And the best part is, it's free on Game Pass. Definitely do yourselves a favour and check it out if you haven't already.

Just finished Override: Mech City Brawl on Xbox One that was recently added to Xbox Live Gold and it was a pretty fun game. Nothing too special about it, it's basically a mech fighting game and while the gameplay felt clunky, it was still rather fun to beat on oversized insects with a mech. Definitely worth giving the campaign a go, which is only a couple of hours long but you get a fair amount of gamerscore for doing so (almost 300 G).

It's been a long time coming but I've finally finished Strider (2014) on Xbox One. I originally played through a fair chunk of the game on PS4 when it was offered as a PS+ title but I never finished it. So I bought it again on XB1 a while ago and now I've managed to beat it. It's phenomenal Metroidvania game, one that I rarely hear people mention whenever I look up good Metroidvania titles to play through. This one is definitely up there among the greatest ones though. It feels very unique as well, you're basically a ninja that can climb on any walls, who slashes with his sword through his enemies really fast, throws ninja stars and all that good stuff, mixed with the Metroidvania genre. There are lots of cool weapons and upgrades to fun, as well as tons of epic boss battles. I highly enjoyed my time with this game and I wholeheartedly recommend it to any fan of Metroidvania games.

I got 92% completion at about 7 hours of playtime and 700 G worth of achievements, which is really good considering that I didn't try to 100% each area since there's no convenient fast travel system. But yeah, I'm really happy with those numbers and I feel content with moving to my next game(s) now, which will be Spiritfarer, Battletoads and I believe New Super Lucky's Tale will be added to Game Pass tomorrow, so I'll definitely play that one as well.

Just beat New Super Lucky's Tale. I got 100% in all the worlds before the final boss. There's still one more world to complete in the epilogue which I'll do later on. Anyway, this game was absolutely phenomenal. It's definitely one of my favourite 3D platformers in recent memory and playing it with a better camera, revised and completely new levels, DLC integrated with the main story, more costumes to buy and just QoL improvements made the experience way more enjoyable compared to the first game. The achievements are really good as well, I managed to get 750 G while getting 100% in each world and I can still get around 100 G more in the epilogue world. So 850 G without putting in much effort is a very good amount for a game like this.

I wish Microsoft would buy this developer and have them create more platforming titles exclusively on Xbox because these guys are great at making fun platformers, which Xbox desperately needs more of. I would love to see a sequel to this game with larger levels and more variety in gameplay mechanics.

@LtSarge Finished Gears 5 today as well and wow! This game has 84 on metacritic and it is vastly underrated I think.

The team behind this game really killed it. I played Gears 4 and 5 back to back and you can clearly see the studio maturing and doing a bolder more confident work with 5.

The gameplay is solid, enjoyable and very reliable. It also has enough variety. The open world sections are interesting too. Best of all ACT III (the desert with red sands) is some of the most beautiful environments ever in any game I have seen. This game is really a showcase that Coalition can make games that

The characters and story was great. The dialogue was spot on and the banter and humour among team members was enjoyable. As you mentioned by the final act of Gears 5 you actually care about these people a fair bit. The sound design and soundtrack was also very very good.

Gears of War 4:
This game was also and enjoyable game and honestly hard to put down. The story doesn't quite pack the same punch as in Gears 5 but it does a nice job of setting up a new trilogy of sorts. The graphics and gameplay were also really enjoyable.

@BrilliantBill I agree, I think Gears 5 is very underrated as well considering how good it is when compared to its predecessors. I thought Gears 4 was good but it didn't blow me away as Gears 5 did. For example, the scene in the beginning of the game where JD tells Baird to call down the Hammer of Dawn to kill those Swarmaks felt so satisfying at first but then we realise that he messed up very badly and seeing all those civilians die while JD couldn't do anything to save him was really shocking to me. Not to mention the transition from him to Kait as you realise that he's not the protagonist of this game anymore. That was all really good stuff, haven't felt emotional like that since Gears 3.

But yeah, Gears 6 has the potential to be something truly great on Series X as it will be the end of this second trilogy. I'm very much looking forward to it!

I just finished Alan Wake. I liked it very much and apart from some ugly faces the game has aged really well too. I’m thinking of playing Quantum Break after this, and then Control when the Series X version is out.

I finished Quantum Break yesterday. It was pretty good, but not nearly as enjoyable as Alan Wake.

I finished Yooka-Laylee today. 100% completion.
Fun game, it’s been a while since I played one of these collectathon type games. Last time was probably when Mario Odyssey was new.
I liked the worlds, and the controls were great, but the camera is not always your friend. I also didn’t like all the constant annoying sound effects, and some of the music tracks were pretty horrible too.

Overall I liked the game, and the lenght was just right.

I just finished Carrion.
What a lovely game, I enjoyed every minute of it. A really fresh take on the Metroidvania genre. My only complaint is that the game doesn’t have map, which can make backtracking a bit frustrating. Other than that, the game has a really nice flow to the gameplay and controls, the atmosphere and soundtrack is spot on, and the lenght was just right.

WWE 2k Battlegrounds. Completed the campaign in about 4 hours, got the full 1000G in another 30 minutes. The AI is absolutely atrocious. Not only did I not lose once, but the AI didn't even attempt a pin, submission, or cage escape during the entirety of the campaign.

Would have taken less time to complete if the game didn't ignore directional inputs when you're trying to Irish Whip a guy to the ropes. And if the game realised that you can't be counted out when you're standing in the middle of the ring. And if the game didn't crash twice. And if your tag partner didn't try to break up every single pinfall attempt, even if you're the one pinning the opponent.

I feel tremendously sorry for anybody who bought the deluxe version.

Just finished Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order on Xbox One after about 20-30 hours of playtime. This game was phenomenal! I'm not a huge Star Wars fan but the game has made me more interested in this franchise now. Couple that with exceptional level design and fun as well as challenging combat and you have a game that succeeds telling an engrossing story while also delivering engaging gameplay that you can enjoy for hours at a time. It's definitely one of my favourite games in recent time.

I was also not expecting the ending at all because you play through this game and you have one goal in sight and when you reach it there's suddenly a twist that you didn't expect at all. Not gonna spoil or anything but man did the ending give me a good adrenaline rush, lol. This game was overall brilliant, I highly recommend checking it out if you haven't played it yet. And hopefully it will come to EA Play soon so that Game Pass Ultimate members get to experience it that way.

@SuperKMx man that sucks to hear! I really wanted to give this game a shot. I miss the old wrestling games on the N64 and this one looked like it could be some fun. Guess I'll try it if it ever comes to game pass. Thanks for the heads up.
I recently finished Blair Witch. I definitely recommend this one! It can get a bit confusing and one part seemed a tad tedious but it was an overall good game. Working on Hellblade and Doom 2016 now so hopefully I can beat those soon.

@LtSarge Mercy, I loved that game. 3D, Metroidvania. Methodical combat that people fell in love with in FromSoftware games. Zelda/Darksiders-esque puzzles. Star Wars plot & environments. Just a beautiful mash-up of everything wonderful.

XBox/Steam/Epic: owendershot | Switch friend code: I don't remember, these codes are crazy, I'll check later.
Playstations are fine, but I don't have one.

LtSarge

@XBontendo Indeed! I genuinely believe the game will be remembered as one of the best games from this generation since it just does so many things splendidly. I hope Respawn is working on a sequel for it, we need more games like this!

I beat Resident Evil 3 Remake a couple of days ago. I loved it, great gameplay and graphics, and the lenght was just right.

Nice!

Have you played RE2 or RE7?
If so, in your opinion, how does it compare..??

Just finished the walking dead a new frontier. Was a great experience, it's really an interactive film but that's great for a laid back experience. I have the other seasons download but i think I'll give it a few weeks before jumping in again. It was a change from other games but i don't think i can marathon through 3 more seasons of 5-6 episodes each. Would just ruin my enjoyment. Do back to Forza and i really need to move along with RE7
