Just an issue going forwards....

How many here have had your Xbox Internal or External hard drive fail?

I was pleased with the purchase of my 5TB Drive but the thought that with average lifespans of the drives 3-5 years (possibly less), means if it fails there is always the worry downloading all games again....

What's everyone's solution?
Do you just have a back up drive?
Not care, when it fails just buy another and accept the cost as an aspect of going digital?

Having physical discs dosen't solve this issue either as every game needs to be installed before play so without a hard drive you would still have the issue...

I'm aware this is a question many have discussed before but wish to have your current views??
For me having only relatively recently embraced mostly all digital this seems like a large issue down the road....
(Sorry for the ramble)...

I've got 2 4tb drives hooked up and both are almost full so if they fail I've got a lot of games to download! I hadn't even given any thought to the lifespan of the drives.

@crippyd Yes to me it just seems like an issue waiting to happen... At least you have two drives so that spreads the risk in your case...
I guess if within guarentee you could replace it free, but when most hard drives fail it will be after this period...
Seem's to be a case of just buying another, and redownloading everything...

Anyone else?

Well, I don't have external hard drive, and if my internal fails, then it fails. I'm used to delete and redownload games.

@Justifier Understood, I guess with Internet speeds increasing and hard drive's becoming cheaper it might not be that big an issue....

@BANJO I'm not too bothered about having to redownload games, as long as they're available.

I've been lucky in that I haven't had a hard drive fail on me after years of use though I have had one fail out of the box and I had to send it back.

The only normal thing i'm really concerned about is save files and I don't back these up nearly as much as I should 😅. In fact I only ever do it if I'm upgrading the hard drive.

When I swapped out the PS3 hard drive, it took yonks to back up and restore until the new drive failed within a couple of days. I'm pretty sure in that case, redownloading the games took a lot less time. I did it that way with the second new drive so I didn't have to leave it spinning for 48 hours while the PS3 restored data from the back up!

PS4 again, I actually just backed up the largest games on to an external but not using the backup and restore option because I didn't want all my settings and junk data to be restored. After I'd signed in on the fresh install I just plugged in the external and copied over the games normally which was quicker than B+R.

I probably not going to upgrade the XoneX drive until it's out of warranty. That being said, I probably won't anyway. I have a 2tb external I use for game pass and GwG that will probably get used for owned games once those subs run out. That being said, the drive is always spinning with the xbox, even if it's off so I'm sure it won't have as much longevity as the PS4 external which I always power off fully unless I want to pause a game, which isnt frequently.

I have a back up hard drive from 12 years ago with all my old PC data, I should probably swap that onto a new drive. It still works but I think there are a few bad sectors because some files won't open any more!

But yeah, to summarise, my main concern is with save files and games that disappear from the storefront. So I probably wouldn't be too worried about backing up games until the online store reaches its end of life or I've heard about a particular game or dlc that's become unavailable to download.

@ralphdibny Thanks for the detailed response. Your experiences are certainly making me consider carefully what I do going forwards regarding backing up of my games... I might get another hard drive shortly to back up some of the largest Xbox One titles as you have done with your PS4 collection, it sounds like a sensible idea...

I have the same view here regarding the re-downloading of games. It's not really an issue, although it would take a while with 100GB + games like Gears 5/Halo Master Chief Collection etc. Luckily most of the titles are much smaller in size... The actual availability of re-downloading the games, that's my main worry. I haven't even thought about my save files, that's something else to consider..

Digital while convenient and providing less clutter still has some major issues going forwards...

@BANJO yeah most of the time it's not an immediate concern to be honest, it's really legacy consoles that need more thought, stuff like the Wii and DSi. I'm sure it will be reported on this trio of sites if any of the stores are getting shut down so hopefully we will all have some time to sort ourselves for it.

Not sure about Xbox but on PS4 you can just copy the saves to a USB stick, no need for a hard drive or anything.

It does take a while to download stuff, especially those 100gb monsters but I'd probably be expecting to do so if I swapped hard drive or console, I'd just download it in the order of whatever game I wanted to play first and leave everything else going in the background!

I would've just downloaded it all if I didn't have a spare drive laying about to back stuff up on, the time it takes is a bit annoying but the only major concern I could see anyone having is limits on their bandwidth from their ISP. I have downloaded many terabytes within a month sometimes and haven't had a letter yet so I'm sure it's ok on mine!...I hope...lol

But yeah I don't normally keep a back up, I only did it for that one purpose. I'm sure the backup drive will be repurposed for some project of mine in future!

See ya!

BANJO

@ralphdibny Yes, I have considered my Wii with the E-Shop games on it with the E-Shop now closed, luckily I don't have too much on there digitally...

It seems easy enough to copy the saves across for the PS4, I will look into this for the Xbox..

The re-downloading aspect as you say is not too bad, I know when I got my One X with Game Pass I just setup 15 games before work to download and 12 had downloaded by the time I returned and I had 60-65 downloaded within a week... There is no problem in spending a few days re-downloading especially as you can still play on the console while its happening and luckily like you I don't seem to have any limits on bandwidth from my ISP, no letters so far haha!!

Seems like I will be looking for another Hard Drive shortly then, but as you say you can re-purpose it down the line..

@BANJO nice yeah, there was only one Wii game I regretted not getting and it was warioware DIY showcase. I doubt it would even work now as it connects to the DS game but if I wanted a complete collection of wario ware games I'd have to get that one too and I didn't 😭 haha

BANJO

@ralphdibny I just had to look it up, that Warioware title passed me by, looks like I have missed out on that too... Reminds me I still need to get the 3DS version that released near the end of the systems life... Argos sold it really cheap relatively recently if I remember but I'm still yet to pick it up..

I have a 4 TB Seagate for Xbox One X bought in 2017 and no problems. The only thing that worries me is being able to redownload games in the future like @ralphdibny said but I trust Microsoft, not so much Nintendo.

Banjo-

BANJO

@BlueOcean Good to hear both your Hard Drives are working well, hopefully mine continues to do so also..
I do trust Microsoft much more regarding downloads going forwards, Nintendo is behind in this aspect and also very quick to close online features down when shifting to the next generation...

The thing is that Microsoft seems to be going for a more unified system across all their upcoming consoles. They've already said that you'll be able to play pretty much all Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One games that have been made available thus far on Series X and I can see them do the same thing for the next console after Series X. I think that's one of the perks of releasing an upgraded console that's not too different from the previous one in terms of technology. Because that's the issue Sony is facing now with PS5, not only with games but also with controllers (e.g. DualShock 4 not being compatible on PS5). I feel like PS5 was created on its own without taking into consideration the PS4 until afterwards, while Microsoft was taking into consideration all their previous consoles when creating Series X. It seems like they want to go the PC route of bringing over everything from before while still introducing new things, which makes me think that they're the only company that's actually pushing for full preservation instead of constantly re-releasing the same titles and forcing consumers to pay for the same games they already own.

So yeah, the way I see it, Microsoft is definitely the company you'll want to invest in if you don't want to fear losing access to games in the future since these ones will keep being available on the Xbox ecosystem.

@LtSarge I had thought that, the fact Microsoft are supporting all previous consoles on Series X and how they have spoke about backwards compatibility in recent interviews and past years bodes well for the future...
Full preservation seems a key part of their future ambitions for the Xbox brand..

@BANJO ah yeah it's wicked! I picked it up from Argos for £6, well worth it. It's bit like Tony hawk's or crash bandicoot remakes. You've seen it all before but so long ago that it's just great to revisit such an awesome game!

@Blue Ocean don't trust anyone! Well I don't anyway. I don't expect anything from any big company to be honest. They may act like they care but really they just want your dollar. Acts of goodwill are just risks they take to get you to spend more in future. That being said, I do enjoy all my consoles and play them all a lot, especially since lockdown! And of course I like that they brought me to the communities on these websites

BANJO

@ralphdibny £6 is a great price, you got a deal there. Just checked Ebay, a few copies going for £8 to £9 are listed... Cheaper than I thought, I might pick a copy up shortly.
Yes, Warioware is wicked!!

@ralphdibny I mean that I trust Microsoft in terms of digital availability. Nintendo shut the DSi and Wii stores down, will probably shut the Wii U store down soon; they actually have removed some games from sale, sometimes to sell you the more expensive Switch version. Super Mario 3D All-Stars will be removed from the eShop in March. Nobody should trust Nintendo.

@BlueOcean fair enough! Sorry I didn't mean to be preachy, I just went on one of my anti corporate rants 😅

Speaking of Wii U (and 3ds) I think I have most the stuff from those shops that I want. The only I things I'd really like to get from them before they close are the pullblox/fallblox games because they are exclusives
