Topic: Xbox One games on Series X: Performance or Quality Mode?

Hello, I have a question, please.
When I run a Xbox One (X) game on my Series X (with backward compatibility), should I select Performance or Quality Mode, and why?
I understand it may vary from game to game, still I have not a clear idea of what the Series X does regarding these two options.
Thanks everybody.

It depends on a game basis on what the devs did. Generally quality mode involves 4k resolution (some times adding also ray tracing) at a capped 30/60fps and performance generally focus at higher frame rate (60/120 depending on the one in quality mode) at a lower resolution (1080/1440/upscaled 4k).
The best thing to do is Google it.
I for one allways go for performance as I care way way more for stable frame rate than visuals

@Balta666 Thank you very much. I thought the Series X would like to push the Quality Mode to higher fps, so getting the best aesthetics available with more frame per second than on Xbox One; but if the fps are locked by developers I guess it is not possible. I will go for Performance Mode so.

@Pigrotto well it really depends from game to game and in many cases it will be better than Xbox One X but it will allways need to be upgraded by the devs.

One final note: it is not backwards compatibility as series systems read the discs and because of that load screens are allways better but the rest is a bit more complicated

@Balta666 my collection of Xbox One and Series games is all digital (downloaded) but I understand what you are meaning. Thanks again.

@Pigrotto It will vary on a game by game basis and what the developers have implemented for each mode.

Most 'Graphics' modes on XB1 games target 'higher' resolution but cap the frame rate to 30fps. If the resolution is capped at 1800p for example, then you should get 1800/30 with little/no Dynamic Resolution scaling which may of been used on XB1 to maintain that 30fps. In any case, it cannot suddenly jump up to 4k or go above 30fps because the devs capped the performance for XB1 hardware.

Most performance modes may well reduce resolution and cap it to 1080p for example. A number of games often still had frame rate drops which would be cleared up by the extra power of the Series X hardware. However, if its a locked 60fps and capped to 1080p, then that's the 'best' the Series X will be able to deliver. If their performance mode just gave you an 'unlocked' frame rate version of the graphics mode - but generally ran at ~40fps on XB1X, then you will be better off using Performance to get a locked 60fps with no/minimal loss to image quality.

Unless the game is 'patched', any capped resolution/frame rate will still limit the Series X. It can't go above 30fps if the developers have locked that mode to 30fps, similarly, you can't go above the maximum resolution the game is 'capped' to. However, if they rely on DRS to try and maintain the frame-rate and/or drop frames, then you should see a much more stable and consistent performance - not dropping frames or resolution.

You really need to look at each game individually. Basically, if the game 'dropped' frames and/or resolution on XB1X in either mode, the extra resources of the Series X should power it through. I know some games could drop to 50% of the resolution using DRS to try and maintain the frame rate or would not run consistently so Series X will help those games achieve a much more consistent performance.

Because of the various different developers, game engines etc, you really need to try them and decide what's the best for you. Not every '30fps' game feels sluggish (Forza Horizon is a great example) and sometimes, the drop in Visual Quality is too much so maybe that's when you use Graphics. Other times, the visual hit is 'negligible' and 60fps feels so much better so go with Performance...

A pessimist is just an optimist with experience!

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...
