After waiting 10-15 minutes I turned it on and it was working once again. I decided to unplug it again and left it for an hour and a half.
After this I plugged it back in and played Black Ops for 15 minutes. It successfully loaded the game and connected to live and I managed to join a Multiplayer game. So I now have a few questions:
What was the source of this sudden problem?
Will this problem come back in the future/Will the Red Rings come back?
Will I damage the game disc if I continue playing it?
Need help urgently. Please.

The source of the problem is an overheating component in your xbox.
its probobaly nothing but your xbox has now stated that its broken.
your next step – ignore any repair tips on the internet you could set your xbox on fire and void your warrnty.
contact microsoft via phone and arrange for someone to go to your house flat and pick up your xbox.
in the next couple of days a nice man with a smile on his face will come and collect your xbox console with your hardrive to be safe and he will hugg you and take it you then wait 3 weeks and get your existing xbox back with all its imperfections.
then you will wait till it happens again in 6 months time.
IMPORTANT FROM EXPERIENCE
-My xbox 360 has had 3 red lights FOUR times
-I have asked for conpensation FOUR times but to be honest some guy in mexico is just going to open my parcel and throw any complaints in bin as simply reapiring their faults is enough .
-I currently have an overheating rpoblem 2 red lights and look forward to sending my xbox away for another month.
