so my question is will it happen in the future and if so what should i do to prevent it
Suggestion:
Yeah, once it happens once, it's living on borrowed time.
As for preventing future issues, you shouldn't open it up or anything if it's still under the extended warranty. If it's been less than 3 years since you bought it, you should probably just wait until it dies for good, and then send it in. M$ are actually pretty good with the repair process and everything. (They shipped / repaired mine for free even though it was a couple months out of the warranty, in fact.)
If it's been longer than 3 years, or you can't return it for some reason, there are a handful of guides out there for trying to repair it yourself, which are dependant largely on your own skills. Google "xbox 360 three red light fix" or similar, if you're interested.
Still, I'd recommend letting Microsoft deal with it if at all possible. If you want to kill it permanently so they'll fix it, just leave it on / overheat it or something like that.
