How to Prevent the Red Ring of Death for Xbox 360?

I lay my xbox horizontally, not vertically. I also keep it off the carpet. I guess my actual question is, How long can I play the 360 in one sitting? 3,4 hours? 2 hours? I just don't want my xbox to get the RROD because of overheating and playing it too much. What is a safe amount of playing time each day?

Suggestion:

I have only had one RROD and it was right after the 360 had come out. I play my new one for 10-12 hours at a time and have had not problems. Just keep it in a ventilated area. I would put it vertical since the fans are on the top and bottom when laid flat and just have fun and play man.
