Why Wont My Xbox Live Update?

I just finished wiring the ethernet cable to my pc from my 360 and set it up to share the internet connection and tested it and everything and it goes through the network test confirming everything, but then it gets to the section that says "xbox live" and it pauses and then has a slide that comes up saying "yes, update now" or "no, update later" so i select yes and then it goes to the update application screen and the loading bar just sits still until it says failed. any ideas?
