I Just Got an Xbox 360 and I Can't Get Xbox Live Set Up?

The wifi modem is too far away for a cord and a wireless adapter is too much money. But there Is a computer that uses the wifi next to the xbox and I was wondering if I could connect the xbox to the compter is that possible? And what would I need to do that?

Suggestion:

If you have the new 360 S model it should have built in wifi. But i'm guessing you do not.
