Suggestion:
prolly need a router.
Buy a Router, bring it home and unpack it.
Step 2
Install the software that came with the router if you wish. Please note: This is not required. Actually the important "software" is actually firmware in the router. This is accessed by opening a browser and typing in the IP address of the router. example: 192.168.0.1
This can be changed in the firmware. The so-called software CD is little more than instructions.
Step 3
Shut off all power to computers, cable modem, and router.
Step 4
Using the supplied network cable, connect your Cable-modem or DSL-modem's network jack to the WAN jack on the back of your Router.
Step 5
Connect the network jack on the back of you r computer to a jack on the back of the router labeled 1,2,3 or 4. It wont matter. Just pick one.
Step 6
Plug in network cables for additional computers to remaining jacks with numbers.
Step 7
Power up time: Turn on each item in this order.
Modem (wait 30 seconds)
Router
Computer #1
skip computers 2 or 3 until you see #1 work.
Step 8
Once your PC is booted up, watch your system tray. That's the little space near your clock at the bottom right of your screen.
This icon will tell you if you are connected.
Step 9
If all goes well, you can access the internet. Now power up PC #2 and test it. 99% of the time its that easy. If you don't get a connection right away, wait 10 minutes and check it again. If you are still having trouble, check my troubleshooting tips.
Step 10
Troubleshooting tips:
* If your computer says the network cable is unplugged, check your connections.
* If your computer says you have limited access, check your modem to make sure all the lights are green.
* Note: There are settings for networks in the router and in your computer but 99% of the time this won't be required because you were already connected to the internet.
* If PC #2 or #3 wont connect but #1 does, odds are that the network settings for the faulty PC are different than the one that works.
*Start by checking the "work group" on the faulty PC.
For XP, right click my computer > properties > network identification > properties. Make sure all computers have the same work group name and different computer names.
