Suggestion:
If by "set up a Xbox live account,' you mean you upgraded from silver (free) to gold (you had to pay something or use a card) then you are ready to play online!
Make sure your xbox has a connection. Either use a wireless adapter or plug your xbox into your router.
Pop Halo into your Xbox. Run the game as normal. On the title screen, go to matchmaking. Look for a playlist you like (I'd start out with something normal like squad battle … avoid team swat and snipers for now…trust me).
Hit search or start matchmaking.

you need to become an xbox live gold member. There is a card you can buy at most electronic stores even at wal-mart. Or you can buy with off your xbox using a credit card. Once you set it up everything else is easy.
