Xbox Live Silver Help!?

Ok so i decided to log onto my old accounts and just check it out. I decided i go to multiplayer online thinking its not going to work because you need a gold membership, but magically i was playing online with a silver account. I tried another account that was old, and amazingly it worked to. Is there any explanatian for this. I tried it on Call of Duty 4 and also Modern Warfare 2. Im able to play online with an silver account how is this possible?
