In terms of in world marketing for a blog, target the groups. Second Life has hundreds of groups dedicated just to advertising. Yes, you can target those. But better still would be to find groups relating to the same niche as your blog and to contact the owner of those groups. Perhaps you can come up with a deal to have the owner of the group send out a URL in a group notice. You should also have it on your profile and, a personal trick of my own, is to create freebies, distribute them on XStreetSL.com and to have a note card inside the box with the URL to my own blog on there, as well as the URL to my partner’s blog.
The freebie distribution on Second Life is immense, thanks to XStreetSL.com and you can shift literally thousands of a high quality freebie in a very quick time. Give your note card a quirky title that may make people want to read it and you might just get some traffic. Obviously, not everyone will visit a URL in a note card inside a freebie, so don’t expect an extra visit for every single freebie you sell. I personally notice an increase of about 11% in the days immediately after releasing and marketing a new free item.
As for the out of world marketing, well your options are as vast as the options of a non-Second Life blogger. Technorati.com is an amazing place to market your Second Life blog. Technorati.com is used by those searching blogs, as an effective blog directory and also gives you an idea of your blog’s performance, through the Technorati authority statistics. Social networking sites are also an effective way of posting your blog’s link. Don’t go overboard though. Your Facebook friends list will not appreciate constant spamming, but as well as having your blog link in your profile, you should post particularly appealing or relevant posts to your friends as well. Twitter is a great way to market your blog – in fact I personally use a plugin on WordPress, that automatically posts my post title and the link to my Twitter account. This does mean that your titles should be catchy in order to attract more views, but that’s nothing new!
In essence, just because your blog is a niche one and relates to Second Life, does not mean that you have a fewer marketing portals.
