Summary of Talent Trees:
Discipline is a popular Priest spec for current endgame, particularly among PvP enthusiasts. It combines endurance with solid healing, and modest offensive powers. A defining specialization of this tree is it’s focus on shielding others as opposed to direct healing. The Holy specialization is your quintessential PvE healing build; and the bar by which all other healing classes and specializations are measured, it also increases the power of the more basic holy offensive priest spells.. A word of caution though, the Lightwell talent and spell is often the butt of jokes as it requires those being healed to activate it. Your mileage may vary, as it can be very helpful in certain raiding situations.
Lastly we have the Shadow tree, an oddball in terms of the Priest leveling archetypes, this spec focuses almost entirely on dealing damage in Shadowform, a mode which makes you tougher though unable to heal yourself & others. Shadow is a good choice if your guild has an over abundance of healers or you are looking for more offensive power. You won’t get the Shadow trees full effect until Shadowform becomes available at level 40+
Choosing Equipment:
During your early priest carrier you will find that owning a wand, any wand will drastically improve your speed solo questing. Use a wand to do supplemental damage between heals (in a group) or to conserve mana while on solo missions. The more you use your wand against trivial foes, the longer you can go without sitting to drink, and that equates to faster experience generation. Early wands will have only DPS as a stat. Later on try to find wands that boost spell power, intellect, stamina and spirit.
When it comes to picking other weapons consider only the supporting stats. As soon as you get your first wand, fighting with your staff or mainhand offhand combination becomes a waste of time. For low level priests seeking upgrades from the auction house a combination of items “of the owl” and “of the eagle” will give you a well rounded mana pool from intellect, mana regeneration from spirit and health from stamina. Stamina as a stat grows vastly more important if you intend to PvP, some early PvP priests sacrifice spirit almost entirely to boost their Stamina and Intellect. Drink more and die less being their motto. After level 60 spell power and critical strike rating become more important, and more available on gear. At the time of this guide spell power is the most important stat for a healing Priest, though a change to intellect is on the horizon in the cataclysm expansion.
Final Thoughts & Tips:
A Priest, leveling or otherwise is best used as a support character. You will have the best luck gaining quick experience in groups, and guilds making the social aspect rather more important than for other classes. Be polite and friendly, get to know your tanks and apply renew liberally in anticipation of damage, it will save you time, and make you seem more skilled. In battle be quick to cast shields and renew, and understand that people might not always be willing or able to directly protect you. Keep your defense skill high by completing occasional world quests and allowing yourself to take some when it won’t kill you. A coddled Priest with no soloing experience or defense rating from being hit drops quickly, expand your personal skills so that you can be a pillar of strength and not a limiting necessity.
