Relatively recently, we looked across the pond at our American cousins, and were amazed at how litigious they were – now it seems we’ve been bitten by the same bug! Anyone watching daytime TV can’t help but notice the abundance of ‘no win no fee’ adverts from greedy lawyers looking for a fast buck if they can place the blame at somebody else’s door.
Everyone appears to know their ‘Rights’, but hardly anyone seems to understand the responsibilities that underpin those rights. People complain about the circumstances the live in, but leave it to someone else to solve their problems for them. They blame their boss, the economy, society, the government – in fact anyone rather than facing the truth.
But chances are the change will have to come from within if things are to improve. The same problems will keep coming our way until we learn to take responsibility and conduct ourselves differently – only then will the lesson be learned, and the problem disappear. Imagine how different our society would be if we all took responsibility for what we did. Fifty years ago, more people took pride in seeing a job through and not quitting on themselves and their families.
We can’t hope to change the world, but we can change ourselves. As you’re looking to study for self-improvement you’ve already taken the first step in personal responsibility. Successful training will require conscientious habits, and self-accountability.
You are the only one who can be responsible for devoting time and energy to the task. Naturally, your training provider has responsibilities also – to carry out what they’ve promised with quality learning and support materials. That’s essential, and must also be taken seriously by them. But to be triumphant, you must assume your own responsibility to win through.
Learning can be fun and stimulating if approached correctly. It can sometimes take a little protecting yourself from outside negatives – soothsayers and critics are ten-a-penny if they think you’re going to get ahead of them. So take responsibility for your surroundings, and associate only with those who are happy for you to improve.
In Britain today, we’re lucky to have the right to a quality of life not known in our grandparents’ day. But only when we have more regard for the responsibilities those rights carry, will we really reach the pinnacle of modern day success.
