Rally ‘Round the Flag, Boys: Disheartening film of Max Shulman’s novel in regards to small city in uproar over a new missile base in their neighborhood. Cast includes Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Joan Collins, Jack Carson, Dwayne Hickman, Tuesday Weld, and Gale Gordon. (89 minutes, 1958)
Dragonfly: An ER doctor, mourning for his lifeless spouse, acquires a succession of signals from her-containing messages from youthful subjects who’ve had near-death experiences. What do they mean? More drawn out than it needs to be, although a captivating and abnormal tale of one guy’s metaphysical odyssey. Cast includes Kevin Costner, Kathy Bates, Joe Morton, Ron Rifkin, Linda Seek, Susanna Thompson, Jacob Vargas, Jay Thomas, and Matt Craven. (103 minutes, 2002)
Big Time: This is a Tom Delay compilation. Show footage filmed at LA’s Wiltem Show is combined with scenes of the chameleon like Delay as assorted and miscellaneous characters: you’ll see Delay, the sleazy lounge lizard, Delay’s the gravel-voiced crooner, and Delay’s the genuinely astounding actor. For Tom Delays fans, this is the next best thing to noticing him live. (87 minutes, 1988)
The Alomo: Impassioned series of events leading up to the legendary 1836 siege in San Antonio, Texas. A more precise rendition than earlier renderings of the tale, it still battles to handle the numerous elements of this historical occurrence. Cast includes Billy Bob Thornton, Dennis Quaid, Jason Patric, Patrick Wilson, and Emilio Echeverria (135 minutes, 2004)
The King and I: Phenomenal film adaptation of Rodgers and Harnmerstein Broadway musical, based on novel filmed in 1946 as Anna and the Baron of Siam (and redid as Anna and the Emperor). Kerr plays widowed English schoolteacher who voyages to Siam to instruct the Baron’s numerous kids, and finds handling His Highness her best test. Brynner gives the acting job of a generation, and was rewarded with an Oscar reconstructing his Broadway role. Kerr is charming and her harmonizing voice was dubbed by Marni Nixon. Melodies contain “Hello, Youthful Lovers,” “Getting to Know You,” “Shall We Dance.” Cast includes Deborah Kerr, Yul Brynner, Rita Moreno, Martin Benson, Terry Saunders, Rex Thompson, and Alan Mowbray. (133 minutes, 1956)
Air America: Guides Mel and Bob are part of the C.IA.’s smuggling operation in Laos throughout the Vietnam War. They crate anything and anyone anyplace. Too bad they couldn’t soar in a script physician. Supposed action comedy has few giggles and makes little sense. Cast includes Mel Gibson, Robert Downey, Jr., Nancy Travis, David Marshall Grant, Aisle Smith, Ken Jenkins, and Art La Fleur. (112 minutes, 1990)
Foxy Brown: Bloodshed and little else in this story of Nurse Grier and her vendetta against a drug ring that has slaughtered her lover. Cast includes Pam Grier, Peter Brown, Terry Carter, and Kathryn Loder. (94 minutes, 1974)
