Borderline: Abnormal thriller comedy in which L.A. cop Trevor tries to assemble proof contrary to cunning drug smuggler Burr when mixing with hard gentleman MacMurray in Mexico. Starts out promisingly, although eventually slows down in silliness. Burr makes a lucid scoundrel.Tet Cast includes Fred MacMurray, Claire Trevor, Raymond Burr, Jose Torvay, Morris Ankrum, and Roy Roberts. (88 minutes, 1950)
The Fog: A thick haze from the Pacific hangs over a Northwest seaside village, bringing with it murderous and vengeful ghosts. Lame redo of John Carpenter’s 1980 film modifies the structure but does not improve on the first edition. Cast includes Tom Welling, Maggie Grace, Selma Blair, DeRay Davis, Kenneth Welsh, Adrian Hough, Sara Botsford, and Rade Sherbedgia. (100 minutes, 2005)
The Great New Wonderful: Striking drama, set one year after 9-11, concentrates on a variety of New Yorkers who either are battling to handle their emotions in regards to that atrocious night or in reference to their lives as if nothing had occurred. They contain a couple with a dysfunctional child, an older lady snared in a miserable matrimony, a set of security guards, and an outwardly affable accountant who worked at the World Trade Center, and survived. Discreet, incisive research of suppressed anger uses humor and observation to dramatize the irnportance of living a life that has meaning. Cast includes Olympia Dukakis, Jim Gaffigan, Judy Greer, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Tom McCarthy, Sharat Saxena, Naseeruddin Shah, Tony Shalhoub, Stephen Colbert, Dick Latessa, Can Amett, Anita Gillette, and Edie Falco. (87 minutes, 2006)
Prophecy: Classical musician and her physician spouse quarrel over what appears to be gigantic salami in upstate Maine after mercury infecting turns animals into large mutants and worse. Ludicrous terror film is excellent for a few chuckles. Cast includes Talia Shire, Robert Foxworth, Armand Assante, Richard Dysart, and Victoria Racimo. (95 minutes, 1979)
Down Periscope: Maverick naval officer is ultimately given the submarine he requests however it turns out to be a mothballed ruin with a crew that’s not much more superior. If he could demonstrate his mettle (and the vessels) in a battle game scenario, he might graduate to a first rate atomic sub. Gentle comedy follows the black sheep makegood recipe somewhat well. Cast includes Kelsey Grammer, Lauren Holly, Bruce Dem, Thieve Schneider, Rip Torn, Harry Dean Stanton, William H. Macy, Ken Hudson Campbell, Toby Huss, Duane Martin, and Harland Williams. Cry the Beloved Country: Moving redo of the 1951 film based on Alan Paton’s rejoiced novel, in reference to a backwoods pastor (Jones) who, in 1946, makes his first ever trip to the city of Johannesburg in search of his errant child. At the same time prosperous landowner Harris voyages there to claim the body of his child, who has just been killed. We see phenomenal work by Jones, Harris, and a largely foreign cast. Not as understated as the first making, however powerful in its own way. Cast includes Richard Harris, James Earl Jones, Charles S. Dutton, and Vusi Kunene. (120 minutes, 1995)
Foxtrot: O’Toole and his spouse escape Rumania in the late 1930s and shelter on an island heaven to hide from a planet getting ready to explode into battle. Shallow, unsurprising drama; filmed in Mexico. Cast includes Peter O’Toole, Charlotte Rampling, Max von Sydow, Jorge Luke, Helen Rojo, and Claudio Brook. (91 minutes, 1976)
