The Clubland: Youthful gentleman and his buddies set out to make it in the music industry by operating at a hip club on L.A.’ s Sundown Strip, however they have to handle sleazy publicists and identity complications within the band. Modern-day music and trappings might camouflage, or defeat, a soggy tale that may have been made as a 1930s B film. Cast includes Jimmy Tuckett, Lori Trivial, Brad Seek, Heather Stephens, Rodney Eastman, Friend Quaid, Terence Trent D’ Arby, Alexis Arquette, and Steven Tyler. (94 minutes, 1999)

The King and I: Phenomenal film adaptation of Rodgers and Harnmerstein Broadway musical, based on novel filmed in 1946 as Anna and the Baron of Siam (and redid as Anna and the Emperor). Kerr plays widowed English schoolteacher who voyages to Siam to instruct the Baron’s numerous kids, and finds handling His Highness her best test. Brynner gives the acting job of a generation, and was rewarded with an Oscar reconstructing his Broadway role. Kerr is charming and her harmonizing voice was dubbed by Marni Nixon. Melodies contain “Hello, Youthful Lovers,” “Getting to Know You,” “Shall We Dance.” Cast includes Deborah Kerr, Yul Brynner, Rita Moreno, Martin Benson, Terry Saunders, Rex Thompson, and Alan Mowbray. (133 minutes, 1956)

Requiem for a Heavyweight: Solemn account of boxer, Quinn, whose ring occupation is over, pushing him into corruption and degradation. His sleazy supervisor Gleason, understanding teacher Rooney, and Harris as unrealistic city employee are all fine. Cast includes Anthony Quinn, Jackie Gleason, Mickey Rooney, Julie Harris, Nancy Cushman, Madame Spivy, and Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali). (100 minutes, 1952)

My Son John: Archetypal apple-pie parents (Hayes, Jagger) suspect their child (Stroller) of being a communist in this reactionary period piece. DramaticalIy overwrought, however this film is fascinating as a social history. Stroller (who’s brilliant) died before film was completed. Cast includes Helen Hayes, Robert Stroller, Dean Jagger, Van Heflin, Frank McHugh, and Richard Jaeckel. (122 minutes, 1952)

Barnacle Bill: Beery and Core aid essentially typical material as old vinegar and lady trying to trap him into matrimony. Cast includes Wallace Beery, Matjorie Prime, Leo Carrillo, Virginia Weidler, Donald Softhearted, and Barton Mafamilye. (98 minutes, 1941)

Murphy’s Romance: Youthful divorcee (with twelve-year-old child) makes new start in little Arizona town, where she’s allured to an older laid-back widowed pharmacist. This movie is an intriguing, carefree comedy written by Irving Ravetch and Harriet Frank, Jr. Cast includes Sally Field, James Garner, Brian Kerwin, Corey Haim, Dennis Burkley, Georgann Johnson, and Charles Aisle. (107 minutes, 1985)

The Hi-Lo Country: Tale of 2 men in post-WW2 New Mexico who fall in love with the identical lady and she’s already married to someone else. A tribute to the dude way of life and the delights of real kinship, this film has so much going for it (containing Harrelson’s wonderful behavior as a hell-raiser and Oliver Stapleton’s cinematography) that it’s a pity it doesn’t hit the bull’s-eye and Arquette is so boring. Cast includes Woody Harrelson, Billy Crudup, Patricia Arquette, Sam Elliott, Cole Hauser, Penelope Cruz, Darren Caves, Jacob Vargas, James Gammon, Lane Smith, and Katy Jurado. (114 minutes, 1998)

Holes: Boy from an offbeat family is sent to an odd desert camp where it’s trusted that digging holes will develop one’s character. As he gets to know the other black sheep amid the kids and staff pieces of his life start to come together and make sense. Cast includes Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voight, Patricia Arquette, Tim Blake Nelson, Dule Hill, Henry Winkler, Nate Davis, Rick Fox, Scott Plank, Eartha Kitt, Siobhan Fallon Hogan, and Brenden Jefferson. (118 minutes, 2003)
