The Red Violin: Multi-episode film follows the destiny of a hexed violin from 17th-century Italy to 18th century Vienna, 19th century England, 20th-century China and present day Montreal. The tales are mainly downbeat and or aggravating, and the finish up part with appraiser Jackson is difficult to swallow. Colorful locales and enthralling premises sustain limited interest all the way through. Illicit: Cast includes Barbara Stanwyck, James Rennie, Ricardo Cortez, Joan Blondell, and Charles Butterworth. Self sufficient-minded Stanwyck cherishes Rennie, although doesn’t desire matrimony to tarnish her cheerfulness. This is a boring film with way too much talking. Cast includes Marcello Mastroianni, Claudia Cardinale, Anouk Aimee, Sandra Milo, Barbara Steele, Rossella Falk, Madeleine LeBeau, Caterina Boratto, Edra Gale, and Mark Herron. T (81 minutes, 1931)
Dusty: Discreet, feeling little film in regards to a dingo (crazy mutt of the bush), seized when a doggy and ultimately brought up by an old gentleman (Kerr). Grownups can like it as much as kids. Cast includes John Richardson. Bill Kerr, Noel Trevarthen, Carol Bums, Nicholas Holland, John Stanton, and Kate Edwards. (88 minutes, 1982)
The Great McGinty: Sturges’ directorial debut (and Oscar winning screenplay) isn’t up to his later comedy classics, however Donlevy is phenomenal as the bum who is put into the governor’s chair by crooked partisans and then blows it all while he tries to be truthful. Cast includes Brian Donlevy, Muriel Angelus, Akim Tamiroff, Allyn Joslyn, and Louis Jean Heydt. (81 minutes, 1940)
Patty Hearst: A dramatization of the newspaper heiress’s abduction and succeeding brainwashing by the Symbionese Liberation Army. The movie never recovers from a painful first half hour that tries to express, from Hearst’s point of view, the effects of this coordinated mental suffering she is put through. Cast includes Natasha Richardson, William Forsythe, Ving Rhames, Dana Delany, Frances Fisher, Jodi Long, and Olivia Barash. (108 minutes, 1988)
The Alannist: Eccentric and choppy black comedy in reference to a novice door to door security alarm sales man (Arquette) who finds that his manager and self-fashioned mentor (Tucci) is a crook. Then the youthful gentleman falls in love with his first client (Capshaw). Cast includes David Arquette, Stanley Tucci, Kate Capshaw, Mary McCormack, Ryan Reynolds, and Tricia Vessey. (93 minutes, 1998)
Search and Destroy: A severely in hock computer hack on the outer limits of show biz plans to acquire funding for his fantasy film venture, an adaptation of the pop psychologist rantings of a male movement expert. Cast includes Griffin Dunne, Illeana Douglas, Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, John Turturro, Rosanna Arquette, Ethan Hawke, and Martin Scorsese. (90 minutes, 1995)
La Petit Lili: A family’s country house is charged with sentiment while the hotheaded child, a yearning film maker actor, finds that his lady friend is captivated with his mom’s boyfriend, a triumphant head of mainstream films. Brilliant film empowered by Chekhov’s The Seagull, investigating the line between art and life, and how the 2 influence each other. Cast includes Nicole Garcia, Bernard Giraudeau, Jean-Pierre Marielle, Ludivine Sagnier, Robinson Steveniu, Julie Depardieu, Yves Jacques, and Michel Piccoli. (104 minutes, 2003)
The House of Yes: On a stormy day in 1983, a youthful gentleman brings his fiancee home to meet his broken Washington, D.C, family, containing his demented twin sis, Jackie-O, whose fantasies in Jacqueline Kennedy have lengthened to the point of reenacting the JFK assassination-with live bullets. Well made black comedy, based on the stage production by Wendy MacLeod. Cast includes Parker Posey, Josh Harnilton, Tori Spelling, Freddie Prinze, Jr., Genevieve Bujold, and Rachael Leigh Cook. (90 minutes, 1997)
