The Great Race: Long, occasionally ludicrous, often labored comedy, not the best ever made as promoted. South Park: Bigger, Longer And Uncut: Our dynamic four are in top form in the first feature length film of the TV series. There is a new movie at the theater, a Terrence and Phillips film, and the boys are off to see it. When they arrive at the theater they can’t get in because of the R rating. They overcome this obstacle by paying off a street drunk to get the tickets for them. This is the boy’s first real intense introduction to foul language. They leave the movie fully trained in the new words, and use them whenever they can. This leads to outrage from the parents. Since Terrence and Phillip are Canadian, this ends with the US and Canada going to war.
Belizaire the Cajun: Assante is well cast as a charismatic drug dealer in love with a Cajun woman who is the spouse of a prosperous Englishman. This is a choppy and somehow unsurprising drama in reference to the English prejudice and brutality toward the Cajuns in 19th century Louisiana. Cast includes Armand Assante, Gail Youngs, Michael Schoeffiing, Stephen McHattie, Can Patton, and Nancy Barrett. (100 minutes, 1986)
The Incredible Gentleman: A well known and beloved Television megastar dies and Ferrer disposes his commemoratory show, only to find the megastar was a disgraceful fake. Al Morgan adjusted Morgan’s thinly veiled novel in regards to Arthur Godfrey. Cast includes Jose Ferrer, Dean Jagger, Keenan Wynn, Julie London, Jim Backus, and Ed Wynn. (92 minutes, 1956)
Mac and Me: Sort of an E.T. copy in reference to Mac, an outer space being, and his plight in suburban L.A. It is more of a television advertisement than a film. There’s a production number set in a McDonald’s, and the alien lives on Coca-Cola. Cast includes Christine Ebersole, Jonathan Ward, Katrina Caspary, Lauren Stanley, and Jade Calegory. (93 minutes, 1988)
The Air I Breathe: Four overlapping, connect the dots storylines, based on a Chinese proverb and titled “Cheerfulness,” “Delight,” “Grief,” and “Love,” make up this mess of a film. Starts out promisingly, as a disgruntled office android Whitaker unintentionally figures out that a horse race has been fixed, then it inexplicably shits into a cartoon like train wreck. Cast includes Kevin Bacon, Julie Delpy, Brendan Fraser, Andy Garcia, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Clark Gregg, Emile Hirsch, Woodland Whitaker, Kelly Hu, Evan Parke, Taylor Nichols, Winner Rivers, and Jon Bernthal. Having lost his memory when almost being killed, Bourne is retracing his past to try to understand who he was, and why everyone wants him dead. All his skills are put to the test, as the C.I.A. is relentless in its effort to have him eliminated.
