Reminder: It's Your Last Chance to Download July's Games With Gold Offerings
Posted by Dave Letcavage
We shouldn't have to remind you to download free games, but...
It’s the last day of July, which means it’s the last day that Xbox One Gold Subscribers can download Max: The Curse of Brotherhood and, more importantly, the superb platform-brawler Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition. If you have yet to download either of these games, we implore you to do so now, even if you don’t plan to play them any time soon.
Here’s what we had to say about both of these games in their official reviews:
Max: The Curse of Brotherhood — 7/10
"Max: The Curse of Brotherhood, while looking like a kids game, is anything but. The cartoon graphics may be enticing enough for kids to try, but the steep difficulty curve may be too much for them. However, underneath the cutesy disguise is a clever and surprisingly entertaining little game. Curse of Brotherhood leaves you to your devices with nary a hint to help you through its puzzles (which is a good thing), but it's frustrating and unintuitive controls often get in the way of making it something truly special."
Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition — 9/10
"Guacamelee is a fusion of intense platforming and beat-em-up combat, framed in Metroidvania conventions and topped off with a memorable cast, distinct setting, a stellar soundtrack, and zesty humor. These ingredients combine to make for a flavor that’s genuinely fresh and incredibly satisfying. If you’ve had a taste of this delicious entre before and are wondering whether Super Turbo Charged Edition spices things up enough to warrant seconds, the answer is yes. Take a bite of Guacamelee. Chances are you’ll be more than pleased with the sensation that follows."
For you Xbox 360 owners that have a Gold subscription, you have the rest of today to acquire BattleBlock Theater costless from the marketplace. This is a game that we awarded our highest of scores, which roughly translates to: DOWNLOAD IT NOW.
BattleBlock Theater — 10/10
“BattleBlock Theater is one of the finest gaming experiences that’s ever been made available for any platform – and that’s no joke or overstatement. We thought that The Behemoth would have trouble topping the excellent Castle Crashers if we’re entirely honest, but they’ve stepped up to the plate and utterly knocked it out of the park. Genuinely funny, aesthetically impressive, challenging, rewarding, and a superb multiplayer experience whether you’re online or with a friend sitting on the couch and no matter whether you’re playing through the expanded co-op story mode, or playing competitively in one of the minigames. Add that to practically unlimited content thanks to the built-in level editor and community creation hub, and Battleblock Theater is easily right up there with the top platformers and puzzle games from this, and previous generations.”
So there you have it, guys and gals — your final warning. All three of the games listed above are undeniably worth your time, so consider giving them a quick download before August gets here. If you haven't already heard, starting tomorrow Crimson Dragon and Strike Suit Zero will be free through Games With Gold on Xbox One, while owners of the Xbox 360 will be offered Motocross Madness.
