Talking Point: What Games Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue Thirteen

Posted by Dave Letcavage

Plenty of kartin' and hackin' to accompany our sofa slackin'!

Welcome to What Games Are You Playing This Weekend, also known by the uber-popular acronym WGAYPTW. This is a laid-back feature that allows us to share our upcoming weekend gaming plans with all of you. By providing a little window into our personal lives, you can learn what makes us tick as gamers and learn which writer's gaming tastes may align with yours. But it doesn’t only work one way. Once you’ve read through the words we’ve prepared, we’d love if you would head to the comments and tell us about your weekend agenda, as well. Trust us, it's the right thing to do.

With the introduction out of the way, it's time to get this party started.

Ken Barnes (@SuperKMx)

Wolfenstein: The New Order — This weekend, I plan on beating this game once and for all. Honestly, I don't think I have ever, EVER hated an enemy character in a videogame as much as I hate General Deathshead. So far, he's made me genuinely angry, which is interesting, given that it isn't an emotion that I usually feel when playing games. Sure, I get frustrated in other games when I can't beat something or when a glitch prevents me from completing a level or something, but I don't think I've ever been actually angry at an AI opponent. I like that at 33 years old, games can still surprise me in ways like that.

Mario Kart 8 — I've taken the compressed air out of storage and blown the cobwebs off the Wii U. It's ready for an old-fashioned boys night in on Friday. I'm considering making a sign for the front door that says "No Girls Allowed" with the "s" drawn backwards, but I think that might be going too far. Plus, I like girls.

Watch_Dogs — I picked this up on launch day and so far haven't had even two minutes to put the disc in the drive and install it. I mean to correct that this weekend.

Dave Letcavage (@DRL)

This is going to be one awesome weekend of gaming. Tonight my wife and I have cleared our schedules and invited friends over for a Mario Kart 8 Party, or what we're referring to as "The Mario Karty" (pun of the year right there). While I can't deny squeezing my share of enjoyment out of Mario Kart Wii, I've never been fond of the rubber banding and obsessive balancing specific to that installment. For that reason I feel as if MK8 is the game I've been waiting for since Double Dash (my fave of the Karts), so you can imagine that I'm more than a little excited.

Then, when I need to switch to solo mode, I'll be working my way deeper into Watch_Dogs. So far I'm very much pleased with the hacktastic adventures of Aiden Pearce, even if the game doesn't completely live up to the promise of the original footage from E3 two years ago. Regardless, Watch Dogs is a great mix of GTA V and Assassin's Creed, a Punisher-esque plot and tone, and a heck of a big value. It's a massive and well-polished game, and an easy recommendation for fans of open-world play.

Eric Santana (@EricDS)

This weekend is dedicated to setting aside some time to game a bit. Watch_Dogs, the title everyone seems to be playing, is what I'll start with. The game looks great and I can't wait to read Anthony B's review. I'll dive into the first few hours and get to hacking.

World Cup fever is about to take over my home, so I'll be getting familiar with the team rosters by playing FIFA 14. With the new Ultimate Team World Cup Packs releasing soon, I need to get back into form. I'm American by birth but will be rooting for the US and Ecuador (which is were my father is from). Hopefully I'm lucky and get one of those kits in the packs.

Mario Kart 8 is also out this week and I'm preparing myself to be beat by my entire family. Setting up a Miiverse account on the Wii U is the goal, so I can join friends is some online karting action to erase the memories of defeats at home.

Anthony Cadogan (@Ubiquitous_Doom)

Watch_Dogs — I purchased this on release day and I am having an absolute blast with it so far. There's just so much to do, and as a result, I've hardly touched the main missions since I get distracted so very easily (in a very good way). I plan to get sucked into the story and discover just who Aiden Pearce is. The city is full of secrets and I intend to find every Chicagoan's secret. They will be mine! Knowledge is Power. Also, I have only dipped my toes into the waters of the online elements of Watch_Dogs. From what I have played though, it seems like the 1vs1 invasions can be extremely tense and the rewards are great! There's so much left to experience in this game!

Worms:Battlegrounds — I've been eagerly waiting for a Worms game on the X1 and finally it has arrived. I will definitely be worming my way around (wherever it is set) and causing lots of mayhem. This is supposed to be the largest worms experience to date, where you can team up with friends and create classes. I can't wait to dig in.

Emma H. Pira (@PeTitosaurus)

My hype for Watch_Dogs died sometime between the first reveal and everything that's passed since, but since I do have a copy I will make sure to at least try it this weekend. Going in with zero expectations, I'm keeping fingers crossed for a pleasant surprise.

I know I'm late to the party as I only started playing Titanfall some odd days ago, but I find myself falling seriously in love with it. I'm not really a FPS person so it's surprising how much Titanfall really appeals to me. I'll be doing my rounds, taking names and looking after my metal darlings.

Lastly I think I will have to try Powerstar Golf as it's now free on the X1. I watched streams from PAX East where Powerstar Golf was played and it looked like a casual, fun way of spending some time with friends. As long as I win.

Josephine Johnson (@MegaKILLScreen)

I'm currently replaying Dead Rising 3 as it turns out that I missed a lot of achievements in my co-op play through (plus we never got to the end as we got distracted by other stuff). I am getting a hell of a lot more out of it now that I'm higher level and don't have to rush through.

Hearthstone has been a constant in my life since it's release on the iPad, replacing Facebook as my preferred time waster. It turns out I'm a sucker for anything that involves collectables, so I'm working towards a complete card set and my golden Druid.

Essentially, I'm just wasting time until Murdered: Soul Suspect comes out. I've been waiting for this title for what seems like forever - expect a review soon after release!

So you made it this far, huh? That means it's your turn! What games are YOU playing this weekend? Share your itinerary with us in the comments.

Girls kick ass in Mario Kart. How I scored my first boyfriend back in my very much younger days - beat everyone and their mothers. :P

mario kart is one of those things that you will always hear about, and for a good reason. I've never played a Mario kart game and said " well this sucks" but speaking of people buying wii u's just for Mario kart. when I went to go get it there were 6 people ahead of me, each buying a wii u for Mario kart. people love to kart. plus the awesome Mario kart drinking games.

Hey guys, I know this is off-topic but Amazon has Xbox One Controllers with the Plug and Play Charge Kit included for $58.28 right now. I just ordered one and thought I'd let everyone know in case they might be interested. This is a pretty good deal, seeing as controllers alone sell for $1.72 more than this as is, and the Plug and Play is another $25. It's free shipping as well (anything over $35).

The price isn't displayed until you check out, but it's $58.28 just so you know. Here's a link if anyone is interested...

Well I did a bit of retro multiplayer gaming tonight with a co-worker of mine and my son. Mario Kart 64 on the Wii U VC and a bit of GoldenEye. Great fun indeed. Just something about couch multiplayer that online multiplayer can't copy.

Other then that probably play some Mega Man V on the 3DS VC.

@SunnyShores the Mario Kart drinking games? This sounds so official. Are these commonly acknowledged? I definitely feel like I've missed a train here.

I guess the Mario kart drinking games aren't exactly official, but they are fun.
the basic one is best with four friends. you open your beer or whatever you're drinking and set it by your feet. the goal is to finish your beer or whatever before the race ends. but you have to pull over by the side of the track and be stopped completely before you can drink. it's pretty great. you can make a drinking game out of any game but Nintendo games are the best to drink to.

Nintendo should totally come out with Wii drink U. a series of awesome drinking mini games. imagine beer pong with a wii remote. I mean it's like it was made for it.
