Rumour: Mortal Kombat Reboot to Show At E3?

Posted by Ken Barnes

The evidence is mounting.

The evidence is mounting that either a Mortal Kombat reboot or sequel is in the works, and will be shown at E3.

A Reddit user has uncovered a bundle of posters (shown right) which show the Mortal Kombat logo, what looks to be a spine, and the text "Who's Next?"

It looks very authentic, although we literally just have that picture to go on. There's no mention of any formats, release dates, or anything along those lines which, to be honest, is only to be expected at this point.

On top of that though, we've got the co-creator of Mortal Kombat and current Creative Director at NetherWorld, Ed Boon, tweeting all kinds of things that relate to the letters "MK."

For example:-

But then, he goes on to directly reject the notion that "Mortal Kombat 10" will be shown at the show:-

He also has the "Who's Next?" text as his Twitter header image.

So, what's the deal? Are we going to see a tenth entry in the Mortal Kombat series at E3, or does Boon's rejection of such a notion a suggestion that we'll see a reboot of the original game - possibly distributed via Xbox Live for Xbox One? Or is it a case of semantics? When someone refers to "Mortal Kombat 10" and gets shut down, could it be that the title is actually "Mortal Kombat X" which in fairness, would make the rejection entirely correct? Or is it all much ado about nothing?

Of course, this is nothing but hyperbole, conjecture, and guesswork at this point but with the hype train in full flow, we'd not be surprised to see something MK-related show up on the big stage at E3.

I'm a ginormous Mortal Kombat fan, so I'll flip if a brand spankin' new MK is in development.

I can't wait, I've been anxiously awaiting the next MK since I finished 9. Injustice was a great stop gap, but the last MK was easily my favorite fighting game of last-gen and I'm looking forward to seeing what the devs can do with PS4 and X1.
