PS4 Bests Xbox One's UK Opening Weekend

Posted by Ken Barnes

250k sold through.

The PlayStation 4 has bested the Xbox One's UK opening weekend sales figures, Chart Track confirmed today.

Sony's system, which launched this past Friday in the UK and Europe, sold through approximately 250,000 units within the first 48 hours, easily beating the Xbox One's number of 150,000 from the launch the previous week.

The news means that the PS4 is officially the UK's fastest selling console ever, and that both consoles easily eclipsed Nintendo's Wii U opening weekend numbers. Depending on who's numbers you look at, both the PS4 and Xbox One already have a larger user base in the UK than the Wii U, which was released over a year ago.

UPDATE: More data has been pushed our way, indicating that the Xbox One has sold 170,000 units in the UK since launch, and that both the PS4 and Xbox One have now definitely surpassed the Wii U in terms of lifetime sales.

That price difference is looming large. And unfortunately the masses really don't get how much the Kinect adds to the overall value of the system. It's a bit of a problem I think for Microsoft as you either have to be a junkie for gaming news like me or actually experience Kinect to appreciate it. The commercials I've seen just don't do it justice and for most people it looks like the Xbox One is overpriced in comparison to the PS4. Regardless I think both systems will sell fine but I wouldn't be surprised at all if the PS4 dominates the sales charts for a while.

@Generik I agree to an extent - the price is definitely an issue. BUT - and this is a big "but" - there's no Xbox One consoles in stock anywhere here in the UK, still. The preorders were sold, and there's been no replenishment as yet, despite there being a queue of people who are still looking to buy. Amazon UK's waiting list is running through to January 7th, at the time of writing.

So I think the numbers are reflective of what was actually delivered to market, as opposed to being reflective of demand. But still, the PS4 could have sold more too, given its in the same situation.

@SuperKMx It would be interesting to know what would have happened if Xbox had released in limited markets like the PS4 did instead of spreading the total allotment over 13 countries. It's quiet possible the numbers may have added up to be similar. Regardless of anything, I've seen more reports that indicate Xbox sales were very good and I am confident this will be successful generation for them.

@Generik Absolutely agree with you. A proper head-to-head comparison would have been incredibly interesting to see!

I fully expected results like this. No that I'm some pro analyst or anything, but with all the support & hype that the PlayStation 4 has had since it was announced, I quickly came to the conclusion that it'd be the more popular console throughout the world.
