Xbox One Sells Big in First 24 Hours

Posted by Dave Letcavage

Most successful launch in Xbox history

Microsoft today announced that over one million Xbox One units have been shifted worldwide in the first 24 hours of hitting store shelves, making it their largest console launch yet.

Along with this sales announcement from Microsoft, come some interesting little tidbits that help convey just how much Xbox One gaming has been done in the past 24 hours.

Over 60 million zombies have been killed in Dead Rising 3
Over 3.6 million miles driven in Forza Motorsport 5
Over 7.1 million combos in Killer Instinct
Over 8.5 million enemies defeated in Ryse: Son of Rome

Those of you worried that you won't be able to find an Xbox One in stores anytime soon though, can relax. According to the announcement, the Xbox One may be "sold out at most retailers" but Microsoft is "working to replenish stock as fast as possible to meet the unprecedented demand" of their customers.

We should be aware that although Sony have also announced sales of over a million PS4's since launch, their numbers are based on US sales only, so far. Microsoft's are based on worldwide numbers, so aren't nearly as impressive...yet. But, it's a solid start, nonetheless.

We'll be eagerly awaiting precise sales numbers sure to surface in the coming weeks.

It seems both PS4 and Xbox One have launched to a lot of excitement (I know I've been really enjoying the PS4) and momentum but the Wii U did too and then sank like a rock. I'm hoping for the sake of this industry that now that all 3 next-gen consoles are out and all are armed with strong 2014 lineups on the exclusive and multiplat front, that the market will have a turn around because frankly, in the home console market the last 3 years, sales have been dismal outside of CoD, GTA V and to a lesser degree, Halo.

It will be interesting to see how well it sells, or if it drops off like WiiU. All of the "hardcore" are the early adopters, but after the "hardcore" buy their systems, will it have enough momentum to carry on?

It's really going to depend on how well MS can market Kinect and their strategy to take over as your go to entertainment centerpiece. Having spent a weekend with the Xbox One now, I'd say the average person would absolutely love what it can do at launch. While the cable integration isn't perfect, I love not having to swap inputs to switch from gaming to TV. Or from TV to some streaming service. And the voice control really does work well. Is it 100%? Definitely not. But it's good enough that I'm more than happy giving a command a second time before reaching for a remote control or the Xbox controller.

@Generik totally agree. I've been amazed by Xbox one a kinect 2, I'm just not sure how well Microsoft have "sold" it to the public...too many screw ups and bad press which is a shame...I think any doubters that gave it a try would be converted straight away.
